BGSU to play four total games during the November event
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team will take part in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge in the 2016-17 season. Head coach Jennifer Roos and the Falcons will play a total of four games in the annual NCAA women's exempt tournament, which is sponsored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
On Thursday (June 30), the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the field of teams and schedule for the Women's Challenge. Each of the eight teams will play three games during the campus-round portion of the event just prior to Thanksgiving, and all eight programs then will play a game on Sunday, November 27, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. All proceeds from the Women's Challenge will benefit the non-profit Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
The Falcons will play three games in as many days in Louisville, Ky., from Nov. 19-21. On Saturday, Nov. 19, BGSU will face the University of Louisville on the Cardinals' home floor. The next day (Nov. 20), the Brown and Orange will meet the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and BG's trip to Louisville will conclude with a contest vs. Lafayette College on Monday, Nov. 21.
Then, on Nov. 27, the Falcons will face Saint Peter's University in Springfield. That game is scheduled to be the second of four games that day at the MassMutual Center.
In addition to BGSU and the Falcons' four opponents, participating schools include Hampton University, the University of Maine and the University of South Carolina. USC will serve as the other host (along with Louisville) for campus-round play.
"We are pleased to be hosting the fourth annual Women's Challenge as we graciously welcome these programs to Springfield, the birthplace of basketball," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "We appreciate the hospitality of our local partners and the MassMutual Center in making this a fantastic event for these teams and their fans."
Roos and the Falcons will be participating in the event for the second time in its four-year history. BGSU played in the 2013 version of the event, winning three of four games. The Falcons traveled to Columbus and lost to Marist before defeating Old Dominion and host Ohio State. Then, BG picked up a 71-48 win over Monmouth at the MassMutual Center. That 2013-14 Falcon team went on to win 30 games – the second-highest total in both school and Mid-American Conference history – and capture the MAC championship with a 17-1 league ledger.
"We are very excited to have the opportunity to compete in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Challenge," said Roos. "The tournament is a first-class event in every facet with some of the best teams in the country participating this year."
Two of BGSU's four opponents won at least 24 games and advanced to national tournament play last March. Chattanooga went 24-8 under head coach Jim Foster, tying for the Southern Conference regular-season title before winning the league tournament crown for the fourth-straight year and advancing to the NCAA Championships. Head coach Jeff Walz and Louisville went 26-8 last season, posting a 15-1 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play and advancing to the second round of the national tournament.
