Jason Bauer Promoted To Associate Head Coach
June 03, 2016 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Gymnastics Coach Kerrie Turner has announced that Jason Bauer has been named Associate Head Coach for the gymnastics program. Bauer has served for the past two seasons as the lead assistant coach, helping the program qualify for NCAA Regionals in 2016 for the first time 25 years.
"Jason has been a huge asset to our program," Turner said. "He brings a positive coaching style and has done a fantastic job recruiting outstanding student-athletes to BGSU. His ability to think outside the box has brought creative upgrades to our program. There is no doubt that this will help BGSU Gymnastics to improve on our record-breaking 2016 season."
Bauer brought Division I coaching experience to Bowling Green when he arrived in 2014. He was an assistant coach at Rutgers from 1997-00. He also has experience coaching level 9 and 10 gymnasts at the club ranks and served as the girls coach for Head Over Heels Gymnastics in 2012. He coached Team USA to a team gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Maccabi Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil and also led Team USA to a silver medal at the 2013 World Maccabiah Games in Israel. The multi-sport event, which is held every four years, brings together more than 9,000 athletes and is considered one of the largest international sporting events in the world.
His time in club gymnastics runs deeper than just that work as he was also owner and head coach for the American Gymnastics Academy from 2003-12. Bauer served as president of the Jersey Optional Gymnastics Association from 2005-13, in which he was in charge of maintaining the rules, policies and governance of the New Jersey gymnastics league. He earned a bachelors degree in sociology from Thomas Edison State College in 2004.
"I am very proud to be promoted to Associate Head Coach for the gymnastics program," Bauer said. "I am excited to continue to build on the momentum we have generated. I want to thank Kerrie Turner for having the faith to bestow this honor and responsibility upon me, as I get to work with the greatest people on a daily basis. The future of BGSU Gymnastics is incredibly bright, and I can't wait to be part of the history we will continue to be making here, as we will continue to Honor the Past and Create the Future!"
BGSU Gymnastics advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 2016 for the first time since the 1991 season. Junior-to-be Laura Mitchell was MAC Champion on the balance beam and senior-to-be Lauren Feely won the MAC all-around title. The program has done just as well in the classroom, earning public recognition by the NCAA for ranking among the top 10 percent of all Division I gymnastics programs in Academic Progress Rate (APR).
