Conference office releases list of honorees from spring sports
The Mid-American Conference office announced the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honorees from the eight spring sports during this 2015-16 academic season Friday morning (June 24), as a total of 166 students were voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions representing the 'best of the best' from each sport's Academic All-MAC Teams.
Â
A total of 12 student-athletes on the lists are from Bowling Green State University. That total tied the Falcons for seventh in the conference, despite BGSU not sponsoring two of the sports recognized on Friday.
Bowling Green's honorees include five members of the women's outdoor track and field program, along with three each from the softball and women's golf teams and one baseball standout. The women's golf program led all MAC schools with nearly 25% of the total amount of honorees for that program. Softball's three players honored tied for third among MAC programs in that sport.
The list of BGSU award winners includes women's track & field student-athletes Aliyah Gustafson, Becca Rae, Jasmine Redman, Rebecca Schott and Rachel Walny; women's golf standouts Lily Bartell, Hannah Lewis and Fran Rodriguez; Briana Combs, Haley Schrock and Marisa Shook from the softball program; and baseball's Kory Brown. Rae, a repeat selection, has earned the honor in both years it has been awarded.
COMPLETE RELEASE FROM MAC OFFICE
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award is a second-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
Â
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2015-16 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
