Tyler Phillips To Compete In USA Juniors Friday
June 23, 2016 | Men's Cross Country

Phillips ran 31:28 at the All-Ohio Championships to meet the time standard. As well, competitors must by 19 years of age or younger.
"Qualifying for the USA Junior Track and Field Championships is the highlight of my running career so far," Phillips said. "The moment I crossed the line at the All-Ohio Championships and knew I had qualified, I was filled with pure joy and excitement and knew the work had paid off. I would not have been able to qualify if it were not for my fellow teammates to train with, Coach Chuck Wentz for building me into a better runner, and Coach Lou Snelling for giving me the opportunity to run for BGSU. I am very excited and honored to represent BGSU at such a significant meet."
As a freshman, Phillips ran in just one race due to injury, the season-opening Mel Brodt Collegiate Open. His time of 16:05.7 was good for fifth overall and second among BGSU runners. In high school, he competed at Armada High School in Armada, Mich., running for the 2014 Michigan state champions.
"Tyler is a very talented young man with a great work ethic," Wentz said. "He has developed quickly after being injured last cross country season. It's an honor for him to participate in this meet and is a huge step for our promising future as a developing program at BGSU."
The men's cross country team, competing with three freshmen and two sophomores, climbed two spots at the MAC Championships with a seventh place finish in 2015. It was the team's best result in 15 years. As well, the Falcons have excelled academically, ranking second in the country with a team grade point average of 3.754.
