Trio of Falcons Recognized as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans

Norfolk, Virginia – The Bowling Green State University swimming & diving team had a trio of Falcons in Daniela Carrillo, Kristin Filby and Claire Stam recognized by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as Scholar All-Americans. The CSCAA selected a record 853 swimmers and divers for its Scholar All-America Team in 2015-16.
The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Carrillo, who was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for the first time in her career at BGSU, achieved a 3.50 GPA for the 2016 spring semester. A First Team All-MAC selection and the 2016 MAC Champion in the 200 breaststroke, Carrillo set a school record time of 2:10.01, just 0.22 seconds shy of the MAC record in the event at the championships. Qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second time in her career in 2016, Carrillo also broke the school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.57) at the MAC Championships.
The Hermosillo, Mexico native also posted a career personal best in the 200 IM at the MAC Championship preliminaries and was a member of the 200 medley relay team that broke a school record at the MAC Championships, completing the event in 1:39.26.
At the 2016 NCAA Championships, Carrillo touched the wall in a time of 2:12.57 in the 200 breaststroke. She also placed in a tie for 26th overall in the 100 breaststroke prelims with a time of 1:00.60.
Filby and Stam both were named Honorable Mention selections with their respective spring GPA's of 3.571 and 4.000.
Filby swam in the 100 breaststroke "A" finals at the MAC Championships, finishing eighth with an NCAA "B" cut qualifying time of 1:02.25. She also swam in the 200 breast "B" final, finishing third overall. At the MAC Championships, Filby swam in the 200 IM "B" final, finishing first overall. The junior posted two NCAA "B" cut qualifying times in the 100 breast and one in the 200 breast on the season, while also totaling four top-three finishes in the 100 and 200 breast throughout the year.
Stam, the Falcons' top diver in both the 1 and 3-meter on the year, set a career personal best in the 1-meter against Eastern Michigan, scoring a 279.00. Versus Oakland and Youngstown State, the freshman finished first in the 1-meter with her score of 255.08. She scored a career-high 266.63 in the 3-meter, picking up a third place finish against Miami. Stam was the only freshman that competed at the MAC Championships in both the 1 and 3-meter and was the lone Falcon diver to qualify to the Zone Diving Championships.
At the Zone C Diving Championships on March 11-12, Stam scored a 197.6 in the 3-meter and earned a 206.50 in the 1-meter. It marked the first time BGSU had a diver qualify to the Zone Championships since the program was brought back to the University.
In addition to the 853 first-team selections, 894 students were named as Honorable Mention selections. These students have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at a regional or zone qualifying meet.
To be selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, swimmers and divers must have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable Mention selections have similarly achieved a GPA of 3.50 and achieved a "B" time standard or competed at their respective diving qualifying meets.
The selections were drawn from 247 colleges and universities.
