Jacksonville, Fla. – Mid-American Conference champion Aliyah Gustafson, along with three-time regional qualifier Makenzie Wheat, will take part in the NCAA Division I East Region Preliminary Round Saturday at the University of North Florida. Both Falcons will compete in the shot put, beginning at 3:30 pm.
Gustafson and Wheat are two of 48 competitors at the meet. The top 12 finishers will advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Gustafson is seeded No. 19 and Wheat is No. 27. A year ago, Wheat finished 19th at this meet after failing to earn a legal mark as a freshman in 2014.
Each competitor will get three throws with their best toss counting. Those seeded No. 25-48 will begin at 3:30 pm and the top 24 seeds will follow.
Gustafson is the top ranked throw in the MAC and won the conference championship two weeks ago with a toss of 51-feet-4.5 just 16 months after tearing her ACL. Wheat placed fifth at the MAC Championships with a throw of 50-1.75. Gustafson's personal best is 51-11 and Wheat's is 51-2.25. A year ago, 51-11.25 was enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships out of the East Region.
