Minorik Named To MAC’s All-Defensive Team
May 24, 2016 | Baseball
AVON, Ohio – Riley Minorik, a freshman on the Bowling Green State University baseball team, was named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Defensive Team as a second baseman, the league announced tonight at the conference tournament in Avon, Ohio. One player at each position, including three outfielders, were honored with the recognition.
Minorik appeared in 53 games across his freshman season, and started 40 ballgames. Almost all of his appearances came at second base – a position that he took over after winning the job during the fall schedule. Minorik made just one error, and finished the season with a .994 fielding percentage. He recorded 99 assists, and 76 putouts.
Minorik started a game-ending double play in a series-clinching win at Ball State on April 24. With the bases loaded and only one out, Minorik fielded a ground ball, and began a 4-6-3 double play that preserved a thrilling 8-7 victory.
Minorik becomes just the third player named to the All-Defensive Team in school history. Former catcher T.J. Losby was named the Defensive Player of the Year during the award's inaugural season in 2014. Last year, catcher Trey Keegan was named to the team.
The native of Akron, Ohio had a very solid rookie season. He led the team in home runs with four, and was tied for second on the team with nine extra-base hits. Minorik hit .245 on the season with 15 RBI and 19 walks. The highlight of Minorik's season came on April 10, when he hit a home run in both games of a doubleheader at Miami.
