May 02, 2016 | General, Men's Golf, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's golfer Pablo Heredia Iglesias and track and field athlete Makenzie Wheat.
Male Athlete of the Week
Pablo Heredia Iglesias, a freshman from Sevilla, Spain, took 12th place at his first-ever MAC Championship with a score of 294, +10. Iglesias, who carded two birdies and 12 pars on the final round of play on Saturday, carded rounds of 74, 77, 70 and 73 over the four round event. The Spaniard registered a team-high 10 birdies to go along with 45 pars on the week, and was the lone Falcon to turn in a sub-par round for the tournament with a round of 70, -1 under par, over the third round of play on Friday.
Female Athlete of the Week
Makenzie Wheat, a junior from Aurora, Ind., threw the shot put 51-feet at the Ashland Alumni Open Saturday to finish in second place at the meet. Each of her six throws in her series surpassed the Mid-American Conference's automatic qualifying standard and she twice threw at least 50-feet. Her fifth throw was the best of her weekend and enough to defeat the current MAC leader, teammate Aliyah Gustafson.
