Cecil, Glowniak, Thompson & Uecker do great things in 2015-16
Back in November, the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Those four individuals – Andrea Cecil (Oak Harbor, Ohio), Clare Glowniak (Corunna, Mich.), Rion Thompson (Lima, Ohio) and Jane Uecker (Akron, Ohio) – went on to have stellar senior seasons at their respective high schools.
Cecil, a 6-1 wing/forward, led Oak Harbor H.S. to a 23-1 record, a Sandusky Bay Conference title and a final ranking of No. 2 in Ohio Division II this past season. She was named to the All-Ohio First Team after averaging 22.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.8 steals. Cecil hit 37 percent of her three-point tries as a senior en route to earning All-SBC and all-district honors for the third time each, and was the SBC Player of the Year in 2015-16. She scored a school-record 1,823 points in 99 career games. The Rockets went undefeated in the regular season and advanced to the district semifinals.
Glowniak, a 6-2 post player, was an Associated Press All-Michigan Second-Team selection in Class A, earning all-state honors for the second consecutive season. She led her well-balanced Flushing H.S. team to a Flint Metro League championship and a trip to the district finals in '15-16, averaging nine points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and 1.5 blocked shots on the year. Flushing finished the regular season ranked 12th in the MLive.com poll, and the team had a 19-game winning streak this past season. A four-year starter, Glowniak helped the Raiders to an overall record of 69-24 during that time.
Thompson, a 5-10 combo guard at Lima Senior H.S., was named to the AP All-Ohio First Team in Division I, earning all-state honors for the third-straight year. The Northwest District Division I Player of the Year as a senior, she was selected to the All-District Team for the third consecutive year, and was named to the All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) First-Team, also for the third-straight season. Thompson averaged 26.5 points per game as a senior, and set school records for points in a game (46) and a career (1,901). The Spartans finished with a 15-9 overall record and advanced to the second round of the district tournament.
Uecker, a 6-3 post player at St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S., earned AP All-Ohio Special Mention in Division II as a senior, and was a first-team all-district selection. She averaged 13 points per game as her team finished with an 18-7 record and advanced to the district finals. Uecker, like her fellow incoming freshmen, was selected to play in multiple postseason all-star games, including the Stark-Summit All-Star Game. She was recognized as outstanding female student-athlete at the Dapper Dan banquet.
The Falcons of head coach Jennifer Roos had two seniors – Miriam Justinger and Lauren Tibbs – on the 2015-16 roster. The returning Falcons, plus the four newcomers, will get a jump on the 2016-17 season with a trip to Cuba in August. BGSU will play three games on the trip, and will also be permitted 10 days of practice prior to the foreign trip.
