Noblesville, Ind. – Highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par 3 hole No. 7 by BGSU senior Hannah Lewis and a BGSU career-low round of 72, even par, from junior Fran Rodriguez, all five Falcons carded rounds of 76 or below to record a team round of 295, +7, on Friday on the first round of play at the 2016 MAC Women's Golf Championships held at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
BGSU's round of 295, +7, is a record 18-hole team score for the BGSU women's golf program at the MAC Championship Tournament.
"Today's team performance is a representation of all the players and teams before us who were and are committed to this program. We are grateful for all the people who have been an impactful part of what we were able to accomplish today," stated head coach Stephanie Young.
With their opening round score of 295, +7, the Falcons concluded day one in fourth-place overall on the team leaderboard. BGSU is just six strokes behind the leader in Toledo at 289, +2, and one stroke behind No. 13 nationally ranked Kent State who is in third with a round one score of 294, +6.
BGSU's round of 295, +7, on Friday eclipses the Falcons' previous record low 18-hole team score at the MAC Championships of 306, +18, which BGSU turned in over the second round of play in both 2015 and 2014.
The round of 295 is also the fifth lowest 18-hole tournament team score in BGSU women's program history.
"Everyone stepped up big when we needed to close it out. Fran had a great career low today to lead us with a 72. Mikayla followed to give us a junior class 1-2 punch. Our freshman, Erin, had a super first round of her MAC Championships career," continued Coach Young. "And of course Hannah's hole-in-one and Lily's birdie on hole No. 18 were gutsy performances for our seniors."
Rodriguez paced the Falcons' strong play on Friday with a round of 72, even par, to end day one in a tie for fifth-place overall. Her BGSU career-low round included four birdies, three of which came on the front nine, and 11 pars.
Just one stroke behind Rodriguez was fellow classmate Mikayla Baer with a score of 73, +2. Baer, who will enter round two of play tomorrow in a tie for seventh-place, has carded back-to-back rounds of 73 over her last two rounds of golf, including the final round of play at the Snowman Classic last weekend. She birdied holes No. 4 and No. 17 to go along with a team-high 13 pars on the day.
Matching Baer with a team-high 13 pars on round one was senior Lily Bartell with her round of 75, +3. The senior, who ended the day with a birdie on the par 5 No. 18, wrapped up day one in a tie for 19th overall
Also shooting an opening round 75, +3, on Friday was Lewis. The senior, who is tied with Bartell and eight other players in 19th-place, had the shot of the day with an ace on the par 3 hole No. 7. Along with her eagle, Lewis birdied holes No. 13 and No. 18 on the back nine. She also tallied eight pars over her 18-holes of play.
Freshman Erin Fahey, who is playing in her first-ever MAC Championship Tournament, rounded out the Falcon lineup with a round of 76, +4. Like Lewis, Fahey carded two birdies, on holes No. 3 and No. 12, and 11 pars on Friday to place in a tie for 29th overall.
Behind the first round leader in Toledo is Western Michigan (293) in second-place.
The Falcons will tee-off the second round of the championship event tomorrow morning at 9:40 a.m. ET. BGSU will be playing with Eastern Michigan (296) and Akron (300).
Live scoring will again be available at www.Golfstat.com.
