April 18, 2016 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team begins a stretch of five-consecutive away games with a ballgame at Wright State tomorrow (April 19) night. The contest, which will be held at Wright State's Nischwitz Stadium, is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
"We are very excited to play at Wright State on Tuesday," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "They have a great program, and had a fantastic showing last year at the NCAA Regionals. They are off to a very good start this season, and they are going to be a big test for us. We want to bring the momentum that we gained by winning the series over Ohio last weekend, and carry that into tomorrow's game."
The Falcons are coming off a 2-2 week, including a series victory over Ohio across the weekend. Bowling Green defeated the Bobcats, 5-4, on Friday, before clinching the series with a 6-2 win on Saturday. The Falcons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Sunday, but Ohio avoided the sweep and earning the come-from-behind victory.
Greg Basalyg led the Falcons' offensive attack, as he finished the week 6-for-14 (.429) with six RBI, two runs and one home run. Basalyga registered at least one RBI over the first three games of the week, and started the weekend with back-to-back multiple-RBI games.
Other highlights on the weekend included a three-run home run by R.J. Williams on Sunday, which marked his first-career home run. C.J. Schildt picked up his first-career Mid-American Conference victory on Friday, and Danny Schmitz registered his 675th-career win on Saturday. The win was also Schmitz's 350th-career MAC win.
By taking two of three games on the weekend, Bowling Green put itself right back in the MAC Tournament race. As it sits, halfway through the conference slate, the Falcons are tied for the seven seed with Buffalo, Central Michigan and Toledo. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament.
Wright State enters play Tuesday with a 24-11 record, including an 8-3 mark in Horizon League play. The Raiders are coming off a series victory over Toledo, as they took two wins from the Rockets over the weekend. Wright State owns an impressive 9-2 record at Nischwitz Stadium.
After Tuesday's game, Bowling Green will then play a three-game set at Ball State across April 22-24, before an April 27 game at Youngstown State.
