BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Head Coach Danny Schmitz picked up his 675th-career win and 350th-career Mid-American Conference win, as the Bowling Green State University baseball team clinched the weekend series over Ohio University with a 6-2 win at Steller Field on Saturday (April 16) afternoon. After Ohio tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning, the Falcons scored four unanswered runs to close out the contest.
"I was really proud of our guys today," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We talked about needing to put together back-to-back strong efforts. We knew Ohio would come out firing after losing yesterday. We matched their effort, and picked it up as the game went on. This was another huge win for us, but we can't let up tomorrow."
With the victory, Bowling Green improves to 13-22 on the year, and is now tied with Ohio in conference play, as both schools own identical 4-7 records. The Bobcats fall to 15-19 on the season with the loss.
Logan Giddings broke the 2-2 tie, and gave the Orange and Brown the lead for good with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. The two-out RBI marked a common theme on the day for the Falcons, as all six of their runs were driven in with two outs on the board.
Bowling Green took a 2-0 lead by scoring a run apiece across the first two frames. In both innings, the Falcons were able to score after having two outs and nobody on base. In the first, Matt Smith – who finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI – kept the inning alive with a single up the box. Greg Basalyga then doubled him home with a shot into the right-centerfield gap.
In the second, Nick Glanzman sparked a two-out rally with a single through the left side. Glanzman advanced to second on a wild pitch, and quickly came around to score when Justin Mott picked up his fifth RBI on the season by doubling down the left-field line. The double was Mott's first on the season.
After Ohio scored the next two runs, and after Giddings helped BGSU reclaim the lead, the Falcons then broke the game wide open with three-run seventh. Smith singled with two outs to score Riley Minorik. And then Bowling Green's next batter, Basalyga, crushed a two-run home run off the left-field foul pole to give the Falcons a 6-2 lead.
The home run capped off a huge day for Basalyga, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. In yesterday's 5-4 victory, Basalyga also went 2-for-3, while driving in a pair of runs.
From there, the Falcon bullpen took care of business. Kody Brown was the first pitcher out of the Falcon bullpen, and went on to shut out Ohio over three innings. The southpaw allowed just two hits, and struck out one batter. Tony Landi then entered, and for the second-straight day, secured the victory by throwing a perfect ninth inning.
The Falcons received a strong outing from starter Zac Carey. Carey allowed nine hits, but at the end of the day, allowed just two unearned runs over five innings of work. The right-handed hurler stuck out four batters, and did not issue a walk. As a pitching staff, Bowling Green recorded five strikeouts, and zero walks.
The line score was a little bit odd for the Falcons, who were able to win despite being out-hit, 11-8. Heading into the ballgame, Bowling Green held a 2-20 record when being out-hit. The Falcons also committed four errors to Ohio's zero.
Bowling Green will look for the three-game sweep tomorrow afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch. Tomorrow's game will also wrap up a four-game home stand for the Falcons. The Falcons will hit the road for five-straight away games following tomorrow's contest.
