Columbus, Ohio – For the second straight day, the BGSU men's golf team braved frigid temperatures, strong winds and a challenging wet golf course to shoot a second round 303, +19, on Sunday to finish in 12th-place overall at the highly competitive 2016 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
The Falcons carded team scores of 304 and 303 to end the 36-hole event with a team score of 607, +39. BGSU was just 10 strokes out of the top-five on the team leaderboard and finished in front of Eastern Michigan (610), Dayton (614), West Virginia (618) and Wright State (642) out of the 16-team field.
"I'm proud of the way the guys stayed focused, braved the elements and played well these last two days," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "We need to rest tonight and re-energize for 36-holes tomorrow at the Greenbrier. The weather is supposed to be much dryer and warmer, which I know our guys are looking forward to."
Ending the two-day event in a tie for 28th-place overall was both Brett Rinker and Pablo Heredia Iglesias.
Rinker carded a second round 77, +6, on Sunday, and when combined with his first round 73, +2, on Saturday, he finished with a 36-hole score of 150, +8. Over his 36 holes, the junior tallied one eagle, three birdies, 20 pars, 11 bogeys and one double bogey. He eagled the par-5 No. 4 on Sunday for his lone eagle of the tournament.
Heredia Iglesias edged Rinker with a final round 76, +5, on Sunday. The freshman finished the 36-hole event with rounds of 74 and 76 for his combined score of 150, +8. The Spaniard totaled two birdies, one on each day, a team-high 24 pars, and 10 bogeys on the weekend.
Junior Jose Narro finished one stroke behind both Rinker and Heredia Iglesias with his 36-hole score of 151, +9. Narro recorded rounds of 75 and 76 over his two days of play, which included three birdies, 21 pars and 12 bogeys overall.
Matching Narro with a BGSU low round 75, +4, on Sunday was freshman Trey Walker. Walker, who carded a first round 82, +11, on Saturday, finished his weekend with a 36-hole score of 157, +15. The first-year Falcon carded an eagle on hole No. 4 on Sunday and registered three birdies over his 36-holes of play. He also finished with 16 pars, 12 bogeys and four double bogeys over his two rounds of play to finish in a tie for 67th overall.
Falcon Cameron Michalak dropped two strokes off his first round score of 81, +10, to shoot a second round 79, +8, on Sunday to place in a tie for 73rd overall with his 36-hole score of 160, +18. Michalak posted one birdie, 17 pars, 17 bogeys and one double bogey for the two-day event.
No. 31 UNLV won the team championship with a two-round combined score of 586, +18. The Rebels finished five strokes ahead of both No. 37 UAB and No. 49 Michigan State who placed in a tie for second overall with identical team scores of 591, +23.
The Falcons will not have long to rest, as BGSU will return to the course immediately on Monday and Tuesday, April 11-12, to compete at the third annual Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
