BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened its Battle Of I-75 series with the University of Toledo on Friday (April 1) afternoon with a 4-2 loss at Steller Field. An hour and 37 minute rain delay caused the second game of the scheduled doubleheader to be pushed back to Sunday due to darkness. The doubleheader on Sunday will start at noon.
Bowling Green falls to 9-17 (0-4 MAC) with the loss, while Toledo improves to 5-21-1 (2-2 MAC) with the victory.
"I thought we pitched well enough to win," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Our defense was there, as well, but we didn't get the timely hits. We had big chances in the seventh and eighth, and couldn't cash in."
Rain forced the delay right after the conclusion of the top of the sixth inning. When play resumed, Bowling Green quickly went to work, scoring a run in the sixth to pull within a single run at 3-2. Greg Basalyga was hit by a pitch with one out, and advanced to second when a strikeout got away from Toledo's catcher. Randy Righter then plated Basalyga with a single up the middle.
The Falcons then squandered a pair of opportunities in the seventh and eighth. A pair of hit by pitches and a walk loaded the bases for the Orange and Brown with two outs. But Derek Drewes grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat. Toledo then plated a run in the eighth off Tony Landi to inch its lead up to 4-2.
But Bowling Green put together another rally. Cam Daugherty singled with two strikes and one out, and quickly advanced to third when Tyler Greiner singled to right on a perfectly executed hit-and-run. However, Bowling Green's next batter, R.J. Williams, grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the eighth. Landi and Kody Brown combined to throw a scoreless ninth, but the Falcons went down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the contest.
Bowling Green got off to a quick start, as Matt Smith singled up the middle to score Riley Minorik in the third to open the game's scoring. But Toledo scored one in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.
Although rain had been sprinkling for an inning or two, it started pouring during Toledo's two-run sixth, making conditions very difficult to play in. Bowling Green issued two walks in the frame – one with the bases loaded – and hit a batter. The umpires signaled for a delay as soon as the half inning ended.
The rain did not help the Falcons, as on top of having to pitch in the less-than-ideal conditions, Bowling Green also lost the services of its top bullpen performer, Devin Daugherty. Daugherty struck out the side in relief in the sixth, but only could pitch that one inning due to the long delay that followed.
Bowling Green starter C.J. Schildt was knocked out of the ballgame during that sixth inning, as well. In total, Schildt went five innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out two and walking two.
Toledo starter Steven Calhoun picked up the win for the Rockets, logging five innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Michael Jacob picked up the save, as he went the final 2.1 innings, shutting out the Falcons to secure the victory. The series will resume on Sunday with a doubleheader, which is slated to start at noon. Saturday will serve as an off day, as inclement weather is expected in Bowling Green.
