ELON, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team defeated Stony Brook University, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Latham Park. Bowling Green finishes play at the Elon Tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. No other team at the invitational went undefeated over the three-game round robin. The Orange and Brown totaled four more two-out RBI during the game, pushing its weekend total to 14.
The ballgame featured a pair of managers in their 26th seasons with their respective schools, as both Danny Schmitz and Stony Brook's Matt Senk have been managing their clubs for the same amount of time.
The Falcons improve their record to 4-5 with the victory, while Stony Brook falls to 3-7.
"We played great baseball all three games here at the Elon Tournament," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We were able to build on each game. This was a fantastic start to our spring-break trip, and we are excited to compete in the Perfect Game Tournament this coming week."
Bowling Green used a four-run second to jump out to an early lead, quickly erasing Stony Brook's one-run first. After Randy Righter led off the frame with a single, Cody Callaway, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI in yesterday's win over Appalachian State, ripped a double into the left-center field gap. Righter was running on the delivery, and scored from first.
Later in the frame, with two outs, Kory Brown knocked a single into left field with the bases loaded. R.J. Williams then followed with a run-scoring single into left. The hit, which was Williams' first of his career, plated Logan Giddings. Giddings registered his second-career hit earlier in the frame.
Andrew Lacinak got the start for Bowling Green, and picked up his first victory of the season. The lefty induced a pair of double plays over the first two innings. In the first, Stony Brook loaded the bases with no outs, but was only able to plate one run. BGSU turned a double play, trading a run for two outs, prior to Lacinak leaving a runner at third. The southpaw then erased a leadoff single in the second by inducing another double-play ball.
Lacinak also induced a double play in the third, before yielding a run in both the fourth and fifth. The senior stranded the tying run at second to end his outing in the fifth, keeping BGSU's 4-3 lead intact. In his five innings of work, Lacinak surrendered seven hits while walking one.
Matt Smith tacked on an important insurance run in the seventh, as he recorded Bowling Green's 14th two-out RBI of the weekend to inch the Falcons' lead up to 5-3. Smith smoked a triple into the right-center field gap that scored Williams, who drew a two-out walk prior to Smith's triple.
Brad Croy took over for Lacinak, and went on to log two scoreless innings, getting a 6-3 ground out with the bases loaded in the seventh to keep Bowling Green's two-run lead intact. Tony Landi pitched the ninth, and earned his second save of the season by stranding the tying run at third.
The Seawolves had runners on second and third with one out, but Landi was able to induce a pair of ground balls to escape the trouble and nail down the win.
Righter went 2-for-4 and scored a run, as he recorded a hit in all three games at the Elon Tournament. Giddings finished the day 2-for-2 with a run, picking up his first multiple-hit game of his career. Brown, Clanin and Smith picked up a hit apiece, as the trio registered at least one knock in all three games this weekend.
Bowling Green will now head to Emerson, Georgia to take part in the Perfect Game Tournament over March 8-13. The Falcons will open play by taking on Alabama State on March 8 and March 9. The Orange and Brown will then play Presbyterian College March 11, before a March 12 doubleheader with Nebraska-Omaha and Savannah State. Bowling Green will conclude play at the Perfect Game Tournament with another game against Presbyterian College on March 13.
