Huntsville, Ala. – The Bowling Green State University hockey team outshot Alabama Huntsville 32-20 but the Chargers scored seven times on those limited opportunities and played the spoiler role Friday night in a 7-5 victory at Von Braun Center. BGSU looked to stay in the race for the WCHA regular season championship but, with the loss, the Falcons are locked into the No. 3 seed for the WCHA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
"Our mistakes tonight were colossal," BGSU Head Coach Chris Bergeron said. "One team had a bunch to play for tonight and one didn't have much. But Alabama Huntsville is a proud group. The year didn't go the way they wanted it to go, but they proved tonight that they are very capable. We proved tonight that we aren't there yet."
The contest was one of wild momentum swings as the Falcons scored the opening goal just 1:47 into play but Alabama Huntsville scored three times in the first and took a two-goal lead into the first intermission. BGSU rallied with a three-goal second period to build a 4-3 lead but the Chargers scored the first three goals of the third period to take control.
Brandon Hawkins had a three-point night for the Falcons with a goal and two assists. It was the second time this year in which he's posted three points in a game and gives him two goals and three assists in the last two contests. Stephen Baylis, Brett D'Andrea and Sean Walker each had two-point nights for the Falcons with D'Andrea earning the first multi-point night of his career with a pair of assists. Baylis had a goal and an assist to give him six points during his current four-game point scoring streak, while Walker also had a goal and an assist to extend his career-long point-scoring streak to six games.
Kevin Dufour opened the scoring for the Falcons, posting his fourth goal in the past three games. He scored just 1:47 into the contest when he picked up a rebound off of Walker's shot from the point and beat UAH goalie Matt Larose for a 1-0 lead. John Schilling picked up the primary assist after redirecting Walker's initial shot. (CLICK HERE for the goal call)
From there, Alabama Huntsville took over. The Chargers scored twice in a three-minute span and added another goal five minutes later to carry a 3-1 lead into the intermission break despite the fact that shots were tied 8-8.
BGSU, though, rebounded right out of the gate in the second. Tyler Spezia used a tremendous individual effort to beat a defender and then buried the puck only 1:31 into the period to bring the Falcons back within one. D'Andrea earned the first of his two assists on the score. For Spezia, he now has three goals and three assists during a five-game point scoring streak. (CLICK HERE for the goal call)
Later in the period, BGSU went on the power play and Baylis tied the contest by punching the puck home after a scrum in front of the net. D'Andrea got his second assist and Hawkins also got his first point of the night with an assist. (CLICK HERE for the goal call)
The Falcons weren't done and Hawkins lifted Bowling Green to a lead with 1:42 to play in the second. His shot from the slot came on assists from Mark Cooper and Jose Delgadillo to make it 4-3 after two periods. It was Cooper's sixth point in the past four games and Delgadillo's third career point. The score remained 4-3 for the first eight minutes of the third period but Matt Salhany tied the score on a breakaway and the Chargers picked up the lead with a power play goal at 11:07 of the third. UAH scored just 80 seconds later for the 6-4 lead and the Falcons were forced to scramble.
BGSU did get back within one as Walker scored in the slot on a pass from Baylis with 4:48 to play in regulation but Alabama Huntsville put the game away with an empty-netter for the final 7-5 decision. (CLICK HERE for the goal call)
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Falcons and keeps the team on the precipice of a couple of milestones. Head Coach Chris Bergeron sits at 99 career victories and the Falcons remain at 19 wins on the season, looking to post back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time in 20 years.
Bowling Green did score at least four goals for the fourth consecutive contest. BGSU has not done that since doing so against Notre Dame and Ferris State on consecutive weekends in January and February of 2005.
BGSU lost for the first time this year when leading after two periods, falling to 14-1-1. The Falcons were also 15-0-1 on the season when scoring three or more goals in a game before the five-goal outburst that resulted in a loss.
Alabama Huntsville improves to 7-20-6 overall and 5-16-6 in WCHA play. The Falcons fall to 19-12-6 overall and 15-7-5 in conference play. The two teams will close the regular season Saturday at 8:07 pm.
