YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team fell at the hands of the Eastern Michigan University Eagles, 4-0, Saturday (March 26) afternoon at Oestrike Stadium. Eastern Michigan scored twice in the first, and never relinquished the lead en route to the victory.
"We talk about it a lot, but today was a prime example of needing to execute all three phrases in order to win," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We played tremendous defense today, and our pitching was more than good enough, but we didn't put together enough quality at-bats."
With the loss, the Orange and Brown now own a record of 8-15 (0-2 MAC). Eastern Michigan improves to 8-13 (2-0 MAC) with the win.
Unlike yesterday, it was Eastern Michigan that got off to a strong start, as they plated two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead. A pair of tremendous plays turned by the BGSU defense in the third, however, kept Bowling Green's deficit at two runs.
With a runner on first and one out, Kory Brown made an impressive running catch in center field. On a shot that looked like a potential home run off the bat, Brown – who was shaded to right field – ran a long way before snaring the ball and knocking into the wooden fence. EMU's next batter ripped a double down the left-field line, but Matt Smith corralled it, fired it to Cody Callaway at short, who then gunned down the runner at the plate to end the frame with a strong throw to catcher Justin Mott.
Bowling Green continued to make impressive plays in the field, as Nick Glanzman made a diving stop at third in the fifth, and R.J. Williams made a trio of diving catches in right field. But after Eastern Michigan inched its lead up to 3-0 in the fifth, the Falcons squandered a big opportunity to get some runs back in the sixth.
During an inning where EMU head coach Mark Van Ameyde was ejected, Bowling Green put runners on second and third, but a strikeout and ground out to short ended the threat. Callaway hit his team-best eighth double to leadoff the inning, and after a Smith walk, Greg Basalyga moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Riley Minorik and Randy Righter were retired consecutively, however, to end the frame.
Bowling Green starter Zac Carey pitched well despite being tagged with the loss. After a scoreless sixth, Carey was lifted for Devin Daugherty after a leadoff walk in the seventh. Carey allowed his three runs on eight hits, allowing just one run after EMU's two-run first. The righty walked two, and struck out two.
Eastern Michigan concluded the game's scoring in the bottom of the eighth, tacking on an insurance run off Daugherty. But southpaw Kody Brown entered, and shut the door to keep Bowling Green's deficit at 4-0 heading into the ninth.
Unfortunately for BGSU, the Eagles got another great effort from their starting pitcher. Augie Gallardo blanked the Falcons over 5.1 innings, recording seven strikeouts in the process. The Eastern Michigan bullpen took it the rest of the way, nailing down the win.
Bowling Green will conclude the three-game series with the Eagles tomorrow on Easter Sunday. The ballgame is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The Falcons will then host four home games next week at Steller Field. BGSU will host Findlay on Tuesday, March 29, before playing the University of Toledo over April 1-3.
