Falcons Take On Chippewas Tuesday In Mount Pleasant
March 21, 2016 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team continues the 2016 season this week by taking on Central Michigan University on Tuesday (March 22) at Theunissen Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The game will serve as a non-conference matchup.
"This is an exciting week for us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "It's always fun to play in a home opener, and then we will shift our attention to the beginning of MAC play with a series at Eastern Michigan this weekend."
The ballgame will serve as Central Michigan's home opener, and will also be a rematch from last Tuesday's (March 15) Steller Field home opener. On that day, the Chippewas defeated the Falcons by a score of 10-5. Bowling Green took an early 4-0 lead, but Central Michigan scored 10 of the game's final 11 runs to pull away with the victory.
In the March 15 ballgame, Bowling Green hit the first two home runs of the season. Cody Callaway's two-run bomb gave BGSU a 3-0 lead in the second, while Riley Minorik's solo shot in the fifth pulled Bowling Green within two runs at 7-5. The two home runs were the first in the careers of Callaway and Minorik.
Central Michigan will enter Tuesday's game with a 4-15 record, but have not won a game since defeating the Falcons. The Chippewas were swept at Xavier over the weekend, losing 5-0 Friday, 8-5 Saturday and 7-4 on Sunday. The contest will also be the start of a rare two-game midweek slate for the Chippewas, as they will play at Michigan State on Wednesday (March 23).
After 20 games this season, Bowling Green owns a record of 7-13 record. Since knocking off Savannah State on March 12 at the Perfect Game Tournament in Emerson, Georgia to improve to 7-6, the Falcons have lost seven-straight games. Most recently, Western Michigan swept the Falcons in a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend. The Broncos took both games in Kalamazoo on March 18, before sweeping the doubleheader at Steller Field on March 19.
Following Tuesday's contest, the Falcons will shift their attention to the start of play within the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green will travel to Eastern Michigan for a three-game slate this weekend over March 24-26. Bowling Green will play one game against the Eagles on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
