Bowling Green Hosts Central Michigan Tuesday In Home Opener
March 14, 2016 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will host its home opener on Tuesday against Central Michigan University. The game, which is slated for a 3:05 p.m. first pitch from Warren E. Steller Field, will serve as a non-conference game. The two teams will meet again in non-conference action on March 22 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
"We are so excited to play at Steller Field for the first time this season on Tuesday," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "It will be a fun week in Bowling Green with three home games to start our home schedule. We just had a good spring trip, and it's an exciting time of the year with conference play coming up quickly."
The Falcons wrapped up their annual spring-break trip on Sunday (March 13) in Emerson, Georgia at the Perfect Game Tournament. In Emerson, the Falcons went 3-3, winning games against Alabama State, Presbyterian College and Savannah State, and losing games against Alabama State, Presbyterian College and Nebraska-Omaha.
The Falcons began the trip with a perfect 3-0 record at the Elon Tournament, earning wins over Elon, Appalachian State and Stony Brook. In total, the Falcons went 6-3 on the trip, which marked the best spring-break trip for the program since the 2005 team went 6-1.
The Orange and Brown will enter Tuesday's game with a 7-8 record, while CMU currently owns a 3-12 mark. The Chippewas lost their first eight ballgames, and dropped 10 of their first 11 games to open the 2016 season.
However, CMU is playing better baseball as of late, having won two of its last four contests. As a team, Central Michigan is hitting .234, while owning a 7.26 team ERA. Offensively, CMU is led by Zach McKinstry and Daniel Jipping. McKinstry is batting .344 with eight RBI and six extra-base hits, while Jipping has knocked in a team-best 11 RBI, and also leads the team with three home runs. CMU has only three pitchers that own an ERA below 6.00.
The ballgame against Central Michigan will be the beginning of a busy week for the Falcons. Bowling Green will play a rare back-to-back doubleheader over the weekend against Western Michigan University. The first two games will be played at WMU on March 18, while the March 19 doubleheader will take place at Warren E. Steller Field. The games against Western Michigan are also non-conference games.
