McLain, Baylis Honored As WCHA Players Of The Week
February 29, 2016 | Ice Hockey
Edina, Minn. – Bowling Green State University sophomore forward Mitch McLain was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Offensive Player of the Week and freshman forward Stephen Baylis was named WCHA Rookie of the Week. Bowling Green swept Ferris State on Senior Weekend at the BGSU Ice Arena 4-3 and 6-2.
McLain earned WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors after posting two goals and two assists as the Falcons completed WCHA play with an 8-1-5 record at the BGSU Ice Arena. McLain was +2 on the weekend and scored twice in 4:15 of the third period Saturday to turn a 2-2 tied into a 6-2 win. After teammate Kevin Dufour tied the game at 3:14 of the third, McLain scored the game winner just two minutes later. Just over four minutes after that, he added a key insurance goal and gave him his first career multi-goal game. That performance followed on the heels of Friday night's come-from-behind victory in which McLain posted the primary assist on the Falcons' first two goals to overcome a two-goal deficit. It was the first four-point weekend of McLain's career.
Baylis was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week after scoring the game-winner Friday with less than three minutes to play in regulation and adding two assists during the weekend. Friday, Bowling Green rebounded from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to get the series opening win. Baylis picked up a rebound off a Sean Walker shot and buried the game-winner at 17:13 of the third period. Earlier in the period, he recorded the primary assist on Dufour's power play goal that tied the score at 3-3. In Saturday's 6-2 win over the Bulldogs, Baylis picked up another primary assist during a five-period third period flurry that helped the Falcons overcome a 2-1 third period deficit.
Bowling Green enters the final weekend of the regular season with a record of 19-11-6 overall and 15-6-5 in the WCHA. With 35 points, the Falcons sit just two points behind Minnesota State in the race for the league championship. The Falcons will play at last place Alabama Huntsville Friday and Saturday at 8:07 pm.
