Seniors Pace Falcons at Day One of the Rio Verde Invitational

Rio Verde, Arizona – Paced by seniors Hannah Lewis and Lily Bartell, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team carded a team score of 310, +22, on a sunny Friday afternoon over the first round of play at the 2016 Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University on the White Wing Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club in Arizona.
The Falcons' 18-hole team score of 310, +22, has BGSU in 15th-place overall out of the 18-team field heading into the second day of play on Saturday, Feb. 27.
"We started strong today, but had a tough stretch of holes in the middle of the round," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "We were proud of our finish, which kept us within striking distance heading into tomorrow."
Lewis concluded day one in a tie for 32nd-place overall with a first round score of 76, +4. The senior birdied hole No. 14 and totaled 12 pars on afternoon, a team-high.
Bartell turned in a round of 77, +5, to end day one in a tie for 40th overall, as she had an up-and-down 18-holes of play that saw three birdies and eight pars overall. The senior turned in a par-5 stroke average of 4.80, -1 under par, on the day.
Behind the two Falcon seniors were fellow teammates Mikayla Baer with a round of 78, +6, and Erin Fahey with a score of 79, +7. Baer, who will enter day two of play on Saturday in a tie for 52nd overall, had three birdies, all of which came on the back nine, and six pars over her 18 holes of play. Fahey also tallied three birdies and eight pars overall on Friday to place her in a tie at 64th-place.
Sophomore Madelynn Swank rounded out the Falcons' lineup with a first round 87, +15, in which she posted seven pars over her round of 18 to finish day one in a tie for 93rd overall.
Bradley and Toledo sit atop of the team leaderboard with matching team scores of 298, +10, over the first round of play on Friday, while Northern Arizona (299, +11), Wichita State (300, +12) and Eastern Michigan (300, +12) round out the top five.
The Falcons are ahead of Ball State (311, +23), Northern Illinois (313, +25) and Seton Hall (315, +27) after one round of play in the three round event.
The second and third rounds of play are set for an 8:30 a.m. MST (10:30 a.m. EST) shotgun start on both Saturday, Feb. 27, and Sunday, Feb. 28.
