February 23, 2016 | Softball
Falcon senior off to torrid start in 2016
Bowling Green State University softball standout Marisa Shook has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the East Division. The weekly award winners were announced by the league office on Tuesday (Feb. 23).
Shook earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.
Shook, a native of Maumee, Ohio (Anthony Wayne H.S.), hit .455 for the second consecutive week, going 5-for-11 as BG took part in the Rafter Memorial, hosted by Kennesaw State, last weekend.Â
The leftfielder led the Brown and Orange in runs scored (five), home runs (two), walks (four), on-base percentage (.600 - tied for the team lead) and slugging percentage (1.091) during the Falcons' four games in Georgia.
She began her weekend by going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in BG's 6-1 win over Rutgers on Friday afternoon (Feb. 19). Then, she went 1-for-2 with another walk and a run vs. the host school, KSU, that evening.
On Saturday (Feb. 20), Shook had the first two-homer game of her career, with two-run shots in both the fourth and fifth innings as BGSU rallied from a 1-0 deficit to trounce Morehead State, 11-1. She was 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in that victory. On Sunday (Feb. 21) against Bradley, Shook was hitless for the first time all season, going 0-for-2, but she still reached base three times, including a pair of walks.
On the season, Shook is hitting a team-best .455, having gone 5-for-11 in each of the team's first two weekend tournaments. She has four homers this season after hitting three in her first three years as a Falcon.
Shook also has nine runs scored and nine RBI this spring after totaling two runs and one RBI last year. She had a seven-game hitting streak to begin the year, and has an on-base pct. of .571 and a slugging pct. of 1.136. Shook is currently ranked among the top-15 players in the country in three categories in the latest NCAA statistics -- home runs (ninth), slugging pct. (11th) and home runs per game (0.50, 13th).
Shook, as mentioned, was named the player of the week for the MAC's East Division. Kent State's Ronnie Ladines was named MAC East Pitcher of the Week, while Emily Naegele of Northern Illinois and Nicolle Miranda of Eastern Michigan earned player- and pitcher-of-the-week honors, respectively, for the West Division.
Shook and the Falcons head south again this weekend, bussing to Mobile, Ala., to play five games in the South Alabama Invitational this Friday through Sunday (Feb. 26-28). BGSU will face Dartmouth and Wichita State twice each and the host school, USA, once.
