Shook paces Falcon uprising with a pair of homers
Senior Marisa Shook homered twice to spark an offensive explosion by the Bowling Green State University softball team, as the Falcons downed Morehead State University, 11-1 in six innings, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20). The game, part of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament, was held at Bailey Park.
Shook and redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker each had four runs batted in as the Falcons spotted the Eagles a run, then exploded for 11 runs over the final three innings. Shook had two-run homers in both the fourth and the fifth frames, while Raker's three-run blast was part of a five-run sixth.
Sophomore Kayla Koch was 3-for-4 with a double, while junior Aspen Searle chipped in with a pinch-hit RBI double. The Falcons pounded out 12 hits in the six-inning win, while freshman pitchers Kiley Sosby and Brooke Parker combined to allow just five hits on the afternoon.
Six of BGSU's 12 hits went for extra bases.

"This was a very good win for us, as we performed well in all phases of the game today," said BGSU coach Sarah Willis. "It was great to see our line up fight back after falling behind in the fourth! Marisa Shook's first home run gave our lineup some big momentum. She has been that consistent leader for us at the plate. Chelsea Raker, like Marisa, did a great job of driving in runs today. Chelsea is playing very well after missing all of last season.
"I was happy to see our freshman pitchers, Kiley and Brooke, complement each other on the mound. They are both showing great promise for the future."
Believe it or not, the game was scoreless through two and a half innings. In the top of the first, senior Marina Cobbs led off with an infield single, but MSU starter Mackenzie Grossman then struck out the next three batters.
Sosby issued a walk to Kayla McGuffey to begin the bottom of the inning, and McGuffey stole second with one out. But, Sosby got Robyn Leighton to hit a fly ball to centerfield for the second out, and Lindsay Ward hit a weak popup back to the circle to end the opening inning.
Grossmann continued her solid start, striking out her fourth and fifth consecutive batters in the second, then getting a grounder to end the inning.
Sosby worked out of a jam in the bottom of the second, as a pair of hit batsman put runners at first and second with two down, but she struck out Lizzy Margagliotti to get out of it.
Sosby drew a leadoff walk to begin the third, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Katee Hinkle and a wild pitch. But, Grossmann got the next two BG batters to ground out.
In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles broke on top. McGuffey led off with a single, and with one out, Leighton singled as well. Ward's base hit plated McGuffey with the game's first run. Sosby avoided further damage by striking out each of the next two batters.
And, the Falcons quickly erased the deficit in the top of the fourth. Raker worked Grossman for a leadoff walk, and on a 3-2 count, Shook homered to right-center field to score pinch-runner Hannah Giammarino ahead of her.Just like that, the Brown and Orange had the lead, 2-1.
With one out, Koch doubled down the left-field line, but Grossman got a pair of grounders to end the inning.
Sosby retired the Eagles on three-straight fly balls, and the BG offense was back at it in the fifth. Hinkle led off with an infield single, and took second on a grounder by Cobbs. She moved to third on senior Molly Holliday's infield single, then scored on a Raker groundout.
Holliday, who advanced to second on that grounder by Raker, then stole third base. She trotted home when Shook blasted her second homer in as many innings.
Taylor Funk replaced Grossmann, but junior Haley Schrock greeted her with a triple down the right-field line, and Koch's RBI single made it a 6-1 game.
Parker replaced Sosby in the circle in the bottom of the fifth, and worked around a pair of singles to keep BG's lead at five runs. Then, the Brown and Orange put the game away with a five-run sixth.
Sosby led off with a walk, and she scored when junior Aspen Searle laced a pinch-hit double to left.
Megan Tymorek became the Eagles' third pitcher of the day, but Cobbs drew a walk, and both Cobbs and Searle advanced on a wild pitch. Holliday reached base on an error, with Searle crossing the plate. Then, Raker's three-run blast to left-center field cleared the bases and gave the Falcons a 10-run lead.
Tymorek got the first out of the inning, but Schrock then singled up the middle, and Koch singled to left. Allison Rager became MSU's fourth hurler of the game, and walked freshman Alex Sorgi to load the bases. But, Rager escaped damage when Sosby's liner was caught, beginning an inning-ending double play.
Parker faced a trio of pinch-hitters, and got them all to hit grounders to the left side, for a one-two-three sixth.
Sosby threw 50 of her 79 pitches for strikes, allowing one run and three hits in four innings. Sosby walked one batter and struck out four in improving her record to 2-2 on the year. Parker allowed two runs in two scoreless innings of work.
Grossmann gave up five runs and six hits as she worked into the fifth, and Funk and Tymorek both gave up three runs and both got only one out. Rager pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, walking one batter.
The Falcons conclude play in the Rafter Memorial on Sunday morning (Feb. 21), facing Bradley University in a contest slated for a 10:00 a.m. start at Bailey Park.
