
Senior Braiden Dillow threw a complete-game 3-hitter as the Falcons topped Rutgers

Dillow throws complete-game three-hitter; host KSU stops BG in nightcap
The Bowling Green State University softball team combined a masterful performance by senior Braiden Dillow in the circle with a stellar effort from the bottom of the batting order Friday afternoon (Feb. 19), rolling to a 6-1 win over Rutgers University. The game was part of first-day action at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament, hosted by Kennesaw State University.
In BG's second game of the day, the Falcons fell to the host Owls by a 5-1 final. The three-day tournament is being held at KSU's Bailey Park.

The Falcons pounded out 10 hits in the win over Rutgers, with the five through nine hitters in the BGSU batting order going a combined 9-for-15. That quintet included senior Marisa Shook, junior Haley Schrock, Dillow, junior Trista Mokienko and sophomore Katee Hinkle.
Schrock had three hits for the second-straight game, while Shook continued her hot start to the season by going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Hinkle was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in, while Dillow and Mokienko had one hit apiece. Dillow had a two-run double, while Mokienko walked, drove in a run and scored twice.
Meanwhile, in the circle, Dillow threw a complete game three-hitter. She struck out seven batters and did not allow a run until the bottom of the sixth when the Falcons had a six-run lead.
"Dillow did a great job keeping the Scarlet Knights off balance through all seven innings today," said BGSU coach Sarah Willis. "Our defense and offense came out strong to support her as well."
Dillow worked out of an early jam. Stephanie Huang singled to center to begin the RU half of the first, and Jordan Whitley walked to put two runners aboard with no outs. Dillow got Rebecca Hall to hit a fly ball to Shook in left for the first out, and Melanie Slowinski struck out swinging. And, Dillow struck out Sierra Maddox as well to retire the side.
RU starter Whitney Jones retired the first four batters she faced, before Shook walked on four-straight pitches with one out in the top of the second. She moved to second on a grounder by Schrock, but Jones got a strikeout to end the half-inning.
Bridget Carr led off the bottom of the inning and became Dillow's third-straight strikeout victim, but Carly Todd reached on an infield single. then stole second. First baseman Kayla Koch grabbed a liner by Meaghan Wells, and Adriana Burcar hit a ball that was gloved by third baseman Schrock.
Mokienko led off the fourth inning with a walk after an eight-pitch at-bat. Mokienko fouled off four of those pitches, and the other four were out of the strike zone. Â And, when a bunt by Hinkle was misplayed, the sophomore was safe on the sacrifice and Mokienko advanced to third.
Jones got popups to retire the next two batters, but redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker singled to left to score Mokienko and give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Dillow fanned Huang to lead off the Rutgers third, but Whitley walked for the second-straight plate appearance. The BG senior hurler struck out Hall, however, and after Whitley advanced to second base on a wild pitch, Slowinski grounded out to end the inning.
The Falcons got hits on three-straight pitches in the top of the fourth, chasing Jones from the circle. Shook singled on a 2-2 pitch, and the next pitch saw Schrock single through the left side. Then, Dillow doubled to left-center field to score both runners.
Shayla Sweeney replaced Jones for the Scarlet Knights, and was greeted by a Mokienko liner back up the middle, but Sweeney speared it for the first out. But, Hinkle singled to send pinch-runner Hannah Giammarino to third, and after Hinkle stole second, senior Marina Cobbs walked to load the bases. Junior Aspen Searle, in her first appearance of the season, reached on a fielder's choice, but Giammarino was forced out at the plate for the second out. And, another grounder produced a force at second base for the third out, but the Falcons had a 3-0 lead.
Dillow retired the side in order in the Rutgers half of the fourth, and Shook's hot-hitting season continued as she doubled with one out in the fifth, and Schrock reached on an infield hit to put runners at first and second with one down. Schrock was erased at second on Dillow's grounder, but Mokienko singled to score Shook with the Falcons' fourth run. Then, Hinkle ripped a pitch into left-center for a two-run double, with Dillow and Mokienko coming around to make it a 6-0 game.
The double was Hinkle's first career extra-base hit. Hinkle had four hits during all of her freshman season after injuring her hand on the opening weekend of the 2015 season. But, the double made her 5-for-12 at the plate to start '16.
Burcar walked with one out in the bottom of the fifth, ending a string of six consecutive batters retired by Dillow, but the Falcon senior struck out Huang for the second time, then got Whitley to ground out to Hinkle at second.
Aubrie Levine, the Scarlet Knights' third pitcher of the game, retired the Falcons one-two-three in the sixth, but after Dillow set down the first two batters in the bottom of the inning, Maddox hit a solo homer to spoil BG's shutout bid. Dillow responded by retiring Carr for the third out.
Schrock singled with one out in the seventh, for the Falcons' 10th hit of the game, but Dillow's liner was grabbed by Levine, beginning an inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the seventh, Dillow got Todd to hit a grounder back toward the circle for out number one. A liner by Wells was snagged by Schrock for the second out. When Raker fielded Burcar's ground ball and fired to Koch at first, the Falcons had the win.
Four of the Falcons' six runs came with two outs, and BGSU was 6-of-15 with runners in scoring position, compared to 0-of-6 for Rutgers.

Then, Perkowski came all the way around to score on a wild pitch, as the ball caromed away and rolled toward the first-base dugout. The Owls had a 2-0 lead with no outs.
Courtney Sutter lined a ball to the base of the wall in left for a double, and Megan Veringa walked. Falcon freshman Kiley Sosby got Hillary Kartman to hit a popup that was grabbed by shortstop Raker in front of the second-base bag, and Sosby struck out Emily Bishop for the second out. Katie Cannington popped up to Koch at first, getting the Falcons out of the inning, but the hosts had a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons looked to mount a two-out rally in the second inning, as Schrock and sophomore Morgan Evangelista both singled up the middle, but Viers got her third strikeout of the inning to end the threat.
Sosby retired the Owls in order in the bottom of the second, but KSU reliever Monica Vickery set down the Falcons one-two-three in the third. Then, the hosts doubled the lead, as Perkowski was hit by a pitch with one out, and after a fielder's choice produced the second out, Veringa homered to give KSU a four-run advantage.

She struck out Sutter, but Perkowski advanced to third as the ball got away and Evangelista had to throw down to first to retire Sutter. Veringa popped up for the second out, but an illegal pitch scored Perkowski with the Owls' fifth run.
BG got a Shook single in the sixth, and a Sosby base hit in the seventh, but the Falcons could do no further damage.
Both teams had five hits in the game, with Evangelista going 2-for-3 for the Falcons and Perkowski 2-for-2 for the Owls. Perkowski scored two runs and Veringa drove in two for the hosts.
Vickery, the second of three KSU pitchers, picked up the win, while Sikes earned a save with three-and-a-third innings of two-hit scoreless relief. Sosby allowed five runs and five hits in four innings for the Falcons, while Parker did not allow a hit in her two innings of work.
Schrock had four hits in six at-bats on the day, and walked once for a .714 on-base percentage. Shook was 3-for-5 with two walks and three runs scored, and she matched Schrock's .714 OBP. Â Hinkle was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a stolen base and two RBI.
Shook is now hitting .500 on the season, having gone 8-for-16 with team-leading totals of seven runs scored, five RBI and four walks. She has an OBP of .600 and a slugging percentage of 1.063 this year. Shook has had a hit in all six games this year, including an extra-base hit in each of the first five games of the season. Shook has surpassed her totals for all of last season in runs and hits, and she has 17 total bases this year after registering six last year.
Schrock is hitting .421 on the season, with her total of eight hits tying Shook for the team lead. She is 7-for-10 (.700) at the plate over the last three games.
Hinkle is third on the team with a .385 batting average and a .467 OBP. She had four hits during all of her freshman season, after injuring her hand in the opening weekend. This year, Hinkle already has five hits, including her first collegiate extra-base hit. Hinkle has two walks and three RBI, just one shy of her totals for all of last season in both categories.
The Falcons return to Bailey Park on Saturday (Feb. 20), taking on Morehead State University in a game scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Then, the Brown and Orange will conclude play in the Rafter Memorial on Sunday morning (Feb. 21), facing Bradley University at 10:00 a.m.
