Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Department of Athletics has announced that 38 BGSU student-athletes have been accepted into the 2015-16 class for Chi Alpha Sigma – the National College Athlete Honor Society.
Â
"It is my pleasure to nominate each student-athlete on this list of 38 for induction into Chi Alpha Sigma," Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Lee Meserve said. "This honor recognizes both academic and athletic performance at a level worthy of distinction. The breadth of coverage across sports at BGSU indicates that members of the coaching staffs of all our teams are recruiting and encouraging students who can perform academically at this level while being athletes of note. I applaud each and every one of these student-athletes, and it will be a privilege for me to bestow upon them the honor cords symbolic of membership in Chi Alpha Sigma."
Â
This is the sixth class of Chi Alpha Sigma at Bowling Green State University after inducting 50 student-athletes in the inaugural class in 2011. The National College Athlete Honor Society was founded at DePauw University on May 17, 1996, as a student-athlete honor society for the recognition of high academic achievers and sport letter winners at the collegiate level. In total, there have been 284 inductees into Chi Alpha Sigma from BGSU.
Â
To qualify for Chi Alpha Sigma, student-athletes must maintain a 3.4 grade point average or higher, be a junior or senior, and must have earned a varsity letter. Other Mid-American Conference schools with a charter include Ball State, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Ohio.
Â
The student-athletes who are members of the National College Athlete Honor Society will be able to wear a cord at graduation acknowledging the achievement. They will also be recognized during the Athletic Department's Ziggy Awards on April 28.
