BGSU Athletics Announces Adjustment To 2017 Non-Conference Football Schedule
December 08, 2016 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department has announced that BGSU Football will open the 2017 season at Michigan State on Sept. 2, 2017. The Falcons will then host South Dakota in the home opener Sept. 9.
Originally, BGSU was set to host South Dakota in week one and to play at Michigan State in week two. The Falcons will conclude non-conference play at Northwestern Sept. 16 and at Middle Tennessee State University Sept. 23.
The non-conference schedule marks the first time since 2015 that the Falcons have played two "Power Five" conference opponents during the regular season. BGSU defeated both Maryland and Purdue in that season on the way to a 10-4 record and a Mid-American Conference Championship. In fact, BGSU is 3-2 in its last five contests against Big Ten opponents.
BGSU has not faced Michigan State since a 28-17 loss in 2007 and the Spartans have won both meetings between the two programs. In 1981, Michigan State earned a 10-7 victory.
The Falcons have never faced South Dakota but do have a 9-0 record against Football Championship Series (FCS) teams since 2000. BGSU is 13-2 all-time against current members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (8-0 vs. Southern Illinois, 4-2 vs. Youngstown State, 1-0 vs. Northern Iowa).
Bowling Green is 2-0 all-time against Northwestern with the Falcons winning a thrilling 43-42 contest in 2001 and then defeating the Wildcats in the rematch at the 2003 Motor City Bowl 28-24.
The Falcons' final non-conference game will be played at Middle Tennessee State. The teams met for the first time in 2016 with the Blue Raiders earning a 41-21 victory during a deluge that limited either team's ability to throw.
BGSU football was one of 25 Football Bowl Series (FBS) teams to finish the 2016 season with three consecutive victories, closing the year with a 4-8 record. The Falcons are set to return four all-conference players (including two first-teamers) and 13 starters (six on offense; seven on defense).
