Six tournaments, nine home dates highlight the spring slate
Bowling Green State University softball coach Sarah Willis has announced her team's schedule for the 2017 season. The Falcons' spring slate features six tournaments as well as nine home dates at Meserve Field.
BGSU Softball 2017 Schedule
"Our team is looking forward to the 2017 spring schedule," said Willis, who is in her second year at the helm of the Falcons. "Our players have been working hard this fall, and we are excited about the challenges our schedule will present."
For the fourth consecutive season, the Falcons will begin the year in Cleveland, at the CSU Dome Invitational (Feb. 11-12). BGSU will open the 2017 schedule with a Feb. 11 game vs. the host school, Cleveland State, and BGSU will also face Niagara, Canisius and Robert Morris in that tourney.
The Brown and Orange will meet Canisius again the next weekend, facing the Golden Griffins to open play in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic (Feb. 17-19). BGSU will also face Charlotte and St. Bonaventure, with BG's fourth and fifth games to be played against opponents to be determined by the results of the earlier games.
BG heads south once again the following weekend, for five games in the Rajin' Cajun Tournament (Feb. 23-25). BGSU will play two games vs. Drake, and the Falcons will also face Louisiana Lafayette, Maryland and Bradley.
The month of March begins with a trip to Louisville, Ky., where the Falcons will play two games each against Indiana State and Green Bay while also facing the host Cardinals (March 3-5). BG will play a midweek doubleheader at Western Kentucky (March 8) before continuing on to Oxford, Miss., for a fifth tournament in as many weekends. That event will pit the Falcons against Eastern Kentucky, Jackson State, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.
The Falcons' first scheduled outdoor game in the north comes on Wednesday, March 15, when BGSU meets perennial national power Michigan in Ann Arbor. Then, the Falcons will head to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Classic (March 18-19). BG will play two games each against Indiana and UIC in that event.
The Mid-American Conference schedule begins the following weekend, and the league slate will see the Falcons play three games vs. each of the other five schools in the East Division, while crossing over to play a three-game set against three West Division opponents.
The MAC schedule starts with a trip to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to face Central Michigan on March 24-25. Each MAC series sees the teams play a Friday single game followed by a Saturday doubleheader. The Falcons will host Eastern Michigan (April 7-8), Buffalo (April 14-15), Akron (April 28-29) and Kent State (May 5-6) in weekend series, and BGSU will travel to face Northern Illinois (March 31-April 1) and Ohio (April 21-22), in addition to CMU.
The Falcons will one midweek MAC series, taking on Miami in a home doubleheader on April 4, before heading to Oxford for a single game the next week (April 12). The April 4 twinbill will be BGSU's 2017 home opener.
BG steps outside of MAC play on one occasion during the month of April, hitting the road to take on Fort Wayne on April 25.
The 2017 MAC Championships are scheduled for May 10-13 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, with the tournament winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Willis and her staff welcome back 14 players from last year's club, and also have added six newcomers, including four freshmen and a pair of Division-I transfers. Nine of the returnees started at least 10 games a year ago.
"We have put together a competitive travel schedule that will see us tested against some of the top teams in the country, but also will give us opportunities for growth and improvement," said Willis. "Our non-conference schedule should prepare us for the tough Mid-American Conference schedule that will follow."
