Falcon Gymnastics Hosts Annual Orange and Brown Meet on Friday
December 07, 2016 | Gymnastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will host its annual Orange and Brown intra-squad meet at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 at Anderson Arena. There is no charge for admittance to this event.
"This Friday is an opportunity for our team to prepare for our first competition in January," said Falcons' head coach Kerrie Turner. "We will rotate the events in the same order that we will compete at Penn State: bars, beam, floor and vault. I expect to have six to eight athletes on each event, but we will be resting some athletes that we expect to compete next month."
Two-time Mid-American Conference champion Lauren Feely will display her prowess on the vault to begin her senior season, while fellow senior Victoria Heath will perform on vault and beam. She will also do a crowd-friendly floor exercise. The team's third senior, Rachel Reis, returns on the bars.
Laura Mitchell starts her junior season with performances on bars and beam, following her 2016 MAC championship on the beam. Junior transfer India McPeak should participate in three events: vault, beam and floor.
Turner expects to have an impactful freshman class, and several of those athletes will make their BGSU debuts on Friday. Jovannah East will compete in multiple events, including vault and floor exercise. Lexi Augustine is set to show her talent on the bars, beam and floor. Taylor Worthington will also be featured in multiple events, and Alex Johnston returns from injury on the bars and beam.
According to Turner, two athletes will be debuting new moves during the meet. Kayla Rose will display a full twisting double back on full, and Lauren DeMeno will attempt a double front dismount from the bars. Turner also expects Leslie Delgado to finish her comeback from ACL surgery.
"This is a great opportunity for the team to have crowd support and involvement, something that is difficult to replicate in practice. Our goal is to hit as many routines as possible and continue to improve on the team scores that we have achieved in previous intra-squads this fall," said Turner. "I expect our athletes to focus on small details such as stuck landings, perfect handstands and perfect form. I will also be looking for performance value, especially on events such as beam and floor, where athletes can show personality and engage the crowd. It will be an exciting night for our fans to get a good look at the team as we prepare for the season."
The Falcons open the regular season in just four weeks in a quad meet at Penn State that includes Temple and BYU. That event begins at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7.
On that date, Turner will begin her tenth season as head coach of BGSU gymnastics. Her 2016 squad set school records for best team score in any meet (196.500 vs. Northern Illinois) and for best team score at the MAC Championships (195.625). The team also qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the first time in 25 years. Two Falcons won individual MAC championships: Lauren Feely (all-around) and Laura Mitchell (beam). Feely's title was the second of her career after winning on vault in 2015. Both athletes return for the 2017 season.
