Bobcats Hold Off Falcons, 69-58, In MAC Opener
December 31, 2016 | Women's Basketball
BG holds Ohio to 27% shooting over the final 3 quarters, but late 1st-quarter run is the difference
Visiting Ohio University used a late-first quarter run to forge ahead, and the Bobcats were able to hold the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team at arm's length the rest of the way en route to a 69-58 win over the Falcons Saturday afternoon (Dec. 31). The game, the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, was held at the Stroh Center.

Quiera Lampkins had 21 points to lead the visitors, while Jasmine Weatherspoon had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Sophomore Carly Santoro led a balanced BG attack with 15 points, while freshman Caterrion Thompson scored 10 points, the highest total of her young career. Senior Ashley Tunstall added nine points, and all three of the aforementioned Falcons had eight rebounds as BG held a 47-43 advantage on the boards.
"The effort was so much better (today) than in our last two games," said BGSU head coach Jennifer Roos. "That's what you want from your kids, and I couldn't ask for anything more, other than making shots.
"Both teams were having trouble finding the bottom of the net ... I think they're a better shooting team than that, and I know we're a better shooting team than that. But, with that said, we're even for three quarters with that team. I thought we did a good job of cutting into their lead late in the first half when it could have gotten away.
"Our kids really responded, and we hadn't done that previously. But, at the end of the day, we've got to shoot better."
With the game tied, 11-11, the Bobcats went on a 12-1 run late in the opening period, with a Weatherspoon layup putting the Bobcats on top, 23-12, with 1:35 left in the quarter. The Bobcats shot a blistering 71.4 percent in the first period, going 10-of-14 from the field, but the BG defense held Ohio to only 12 field goals over the final 30 minutes. The 'Cats shot just 27.3% (12-for-44) over the last three quarters, shooting under 30% in each of the three periods.
Ohio's lead reached a game-high 17 points in the second quarter, before Thompson fueled a 7-0 run that ended the half. The freshman had BG's last four points of that run, and also had four rebounds over the final 2:05 of the half.
The Falcons cut the deficit to just six points late in the third period, but could draw no closer. The lead fluctuated between seven and 10 points over the first half of the fourth quarter, before a Kelly Karlis three-pointer gave the visitors a 59-47 lead with 4:49 to go. Another Karlis triple just over a minute later gave the Bobcats a 13-point advantage.
Those triples were two of just four for the Bobcats on the afternoon, and Karlis was the only player in the game to connect from long distance more than once. Ohio was only 4-for-21 from three-point range, while the Falcons were 3-of-22 from beyond the arc.
The Bobcats scored on their first three possessions of the afternoon, but the Falcons -- namely, senior Abby Siefker -- scored on the first two trips down the floor. After Weatherspoon opened the scoring with a layup, Siefker grabbed an offensive rebound, was fouled and knocked down both free-throw tries. Then, she took a pass from sophomore Sydney Lambert and laid the ball up and in to knot the score at four-all.
A pair of shots inside gave Ohio an 8-4 lead, but junior Haley Puk lobbed the ball inside to Tunstall, who made a nifty catch and finished the play in traffic. Then, Siefker's driving layup tied the game at 8-8. The 'Cats went ahead by three on a Lampkins layup and a Karlis free throw, but Puk took a Lambert feed and drained a right-wing three-point try, tying the score at the first media timeout of the day.
Both teams were in some early foul trouble, however. Ohio's Hannah Boesinger was whistled for three fouls within the game's first 3:20, and Siefker picked up her second with 4:51 left in the quarter, heading into the media timeout.
Amani Burke split her free-throw tries coming out of that timeout, then hit a layup on her team's next trip. Those three points began that 12-1 run, which included a Katie Barker three-pointer with 2:35 left in the period and a Weatherspoon layup exactly one minute later. Thompson knocked down a jumper, and sophomore Maddie Cole hit a pair of shots at the stripe to cut the Ohio lead to seven. And, after the teams traded free throws in the last minute of the quarter, it was still a seven-point game, but Dominique Doseck took a Barker pass and hit a long three-point try in the final seconds of the period, giving the visitors a 28-18 lead after 10 minutes.
The visitors scored the first four points of the second period, and after Santoro converted a layup, the Bobcats made two more buckets to take a 36-20 lead with 5:28 left in the half. Puk got herself to the line and split a pair of shots, but a Lampkins layup made it a 38-21 game.
That Lampkins shot made Ohio 4-for-5 from the field in the quarter and 14-for-19 in the game to date. Over the final 24-plus minutes, however, the 'Cats went just 8-of-39 (.205) from the floor.
Freshman Andrea Cecil stopped the bleeding, grabbing a defensive rebound and going coast to coast for a layup, but Yamonie Jenkins scored to restore Ohio's 17-point margin. But, Lambert hit a free throw, Tunstall grabbed a rebound and scored in traffic, and Thompson knocked down a turnaround jumper in the paint. When Thompson was fouled and hit both of the resulting shots with 24.5 seconds left, the Falcons had cut the deficit to 40-30, and BG got a defensive stop to end the opening half.
The teams combined for only seven successful field goals in the third period. Early on, back-to-back layups by Tunstall and Siefker cut the Ohio lead to 42-34, and after the Bobcats responded with three-straight points, Lambert drilled a three-point try from the right wing. The visitors quickly responded with a Weatherspoon layup, but that bucket would prove to be the 'Cats last field goal of the quarter.
BG held Ohio without a basket for the final 5:40 of the third period and the first 50 seconds of the fourth, but could not shave more than four points off of the Ohio lead. Santoro hit a second-chance three-pointer from the top of the arc after a Tunstall offensive rebound and kick-out, and a free throw junior Rachel Myers made it a 47-41 game with 3:10 remaining in the period. But, neither team scored for over two minutes, and the only points over the remainder of the quarter came on two Burke free throws with 1:01 to go.
The fourth period saw Lampkins hit a jumper to end her team's field-goal drought at 6:30, but Tunstall answered with a driving layup at the 8:57 mark. Santoro hit a layup of her own, and knocked down a free-throw try on BG's next possession, cutting the Ohio lead to 53-46 with 7:04 on the clock. But, Boesinger hit a layup, and after each team went 1-of-2 at the stripe, Karlis converted a three-pointer from the left wing to give the 'Cats a 59-47 lead midway through the quarter.
After Santoro hit a layup, Karlis connected once again from long range, with 3:29 remaining. BG would continue to battle, but the Falcons could draw no closer than nine points
The game featured a total of 47 fouls. Boesinger and Weatherspoon each fouled out for the Bobcats, while teammate Taylor Agler had four fouls. For the Falcons, Santoro, Siefker and Tunstall all ended the game with four fouls, although two of Santoro's fouls came in the final minute of the game.
"I've got to credit Abby and Ashley," said Roos. "They shot 33 percent over the last two games, but they came in today and were (a combined) 7-for-12 with 14 rebounds despite playing with foul trouble. I thought they really stepped up to the challenge. Now, we've just got to get some other kids to make some shots. We are better than (our percentage), and we've just got to get into the gym and get some shots up. It will take some hard work to develop some more consistency."
The Falcons will be back in action on Wednesday night (Jan. 4), facing Northern Illinois University in a 7:00 p.m. start at the Stroh Center.
