BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Head coach Mike Jinks and the Bowling Green State University football team announced today the additions of two players for the upcoming 2017 season. Each player is a junior college transfer and will be immediately eligible to play.
The newest members of the Falcon family are Fred Garth (Northwest Mississippi Community College) and Datrin Guyton (Copiah-Lincoln Community College). Both will enter their junior seasons in 2017 and have two seasons of remaining eligibility.
Garth, a native of Amory, Miss., is a defensive back and immediately became a starter for the Rangers as a true freshman in 2014. He started all ten games and led the team's defensive backs with 52 tackles. He also had five pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. As a sophomore in 2016, he led the team with 81 tackles (55 solo) and posted two interceptions, which he returned for 84 yards.
Garth played on both sides of the ball at Amory High School. As a senior, he racked up 51 tackles, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. He also rushed for 436 yards and five touchdowns and passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns.
Datrin Guyton is a 6-5 wide receiver who hails from Manor, Texas. He played in eight games for Copiah-Lincoln during the 2016 season and caught 31 passes for 471 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, he occasionally served on special teams and returned six kickoffs for 104 yards.
Guyton began his collegiate career with the Oregon State Beavers. After playing on the scout team during a redshirt season in 2014, he played in eight games and started three as a freshman in 2015. He caught 14 passes for 178 yards in those eight contests.
At Manor High School, Guyton accrued 1,058 yards and 14 touchdowns in just 44 receptions and scored another three touchdowns via kick return. Those numbers earned him Class 4A second-team all-state honors. He also played safety and was a sprinter for the track team. He was named PrepStar All-Midlands Region, and the Dallas Morning News named Guyton among its top 100 players in Texas in 2013.
BGSU Football went 4-8 in 2016, following three consecutive trips to the Mid-American Conference Championship Game, winning the title in 2013 and 2015. The Falcons, though, were one of just 24 teams in Football Bowl Series to close the regular season on a three-game win streak.
