BGSU Student-Athletes Graduating At Highest Rate In The MAC
November 15, 2016 | General
Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program today and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. BGSU's 89 percent GSR rate was the highest among all MAC schools (Northern Illinois was second at 87 percent) and 14 of the 18 varsity intercollegiate athletics teams had a GSR that ranked among the top half of the league in their respective sport (up from 12-of-18 a year ago). Bowling Green is improved four percent over 2015.
Nine of Bowling Green's teams have a perfect 100 percent GSR, up from seven a year ago, five in 2014 and four in 2013. Another three are at least at 90 percent. Men's golf, hockey, men's cross country, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball all ranked with a perfect graduation success rate, while women's soccer (95 percent), softball (94 percent) and men's basketball (90 percent) all posted exemplary marks.
"Academic success by our student-athletes is at the core of our pursuit of comprehensive excellence," Director of Athletics Bob Moosbrugger said. "The GSR data sends a strong message about the balance of academics within athletics for our student-athletes and we applaud their hard work and continued determination in these areas."
The largest one-year increase within the department came in men's basketball for the second straight year. The program improved to 90 percent from 73 percent a year ago and 56 percent two years ago. Gymnastics climbed eight points to a perfect 100 percent, while women's basketball and softball each increased seven percent. Men's soccer (six percent), football (four percent), women's track and field/cross country (three percent), and baseball (two percent) all saw modest improvement.
Fifteen of BGSU's 18 teams have a GSR that is equal to or ahead of the national graduation success rate for their sport. Men's cross country is 20 points better than the national 80 percent average, while men's basketball (16 points better), hockey (14 percent), women's basketball (13 percent), men's golf (12 percent) and baseball (10 percent) all rank at least 10 percentage points ahead of the national rate.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2006-07 through 2009-10 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
