BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green women's golf team has added two Falcons for the 2017-18 campaign with signings of National Letters of Intent, including Nichole Cox and Sammi Blackburn.
"We are thrilled to announce the signing our 2017 class," Bowling Green women's golf head coach Stephanie Young said. "Nichole and Sammi are first class in every way. They are so excited to be Falcons and will be such a tremendous addition to the BGSU Family. "
A native of Empire, Mich., Cox was a four year letter-winner at Maple City Glen Lake school, where she placed second at regionals in 2013 and 2014 with her team. Throughout her career, Cox won 29 events and never placed outside of the top three in any tournament in which she competed, ultimately leading to earning the Regional Champion title on four occasions. Cox also went on to finish third at the Division 4 LP State Finals in 2013, before taking the Division 4 LP State Finals title three consecutive years (2014, 2015, 2016).
"Nichole's resume reflects she knows what it takes to win. Her dedication and commitment to the game are second to none," Coach Young added. "She has competed in some of the best amateur events which will help her realize success at the next level."
Cox also served as captain of the 2014 and 2015 Record Eagle Golf Dream Team in addition to participating on the Leelanau Enterprise Fall Sports Dream Team three consecutive seasons (2013, 2014, 2015). Holding the school record for the lowest 18 hole score (69), lowest nine hole score (33) and being named golf team MVP all four seasons, Cox made an athletic impression throughout her career. A multi-sport athlete, Cox also played soccer, was on the bowling team, and was the MVP of her basketball team on two occasions.
Also joining the Falcons is Sammi Blackburn. A native of Monroe, Ohio, Blackburn was a four year letter-winner for Monroe High School, where she was named 2016 Player of the Year in her district in addition to being honored as both the 2013 and 2014 Most Valuable District Qualifier. Blackburn also earned the Hornet Award in both 2015 and 2016, and was named First Team Girls Division II All-Ohio for the last two seasons.
"Sammi's passion for the game combined with her work ethic and determination to excel makes her a right fit for this program," said Coach Young. "She has a wealth of tournament experience and that will help her transition into collegiate golf."
With her team, Blackburn earned the Sectional Champion title for the 2015-16 campaign, was the 2015 District Champion and was the 2016 District Runner-Up. Blackburn also finished third place in the state of Ohio in both 2015 and 2016, and broke a school record and tied a state record by shooting a 68 this season. Blackburn also served as team captain of her team, of which she played in the number one spot the last two seasons with the Monroe High School boys team.
"I look forward to coaching both Cox and Blackburn in this next chapter of their careers; they have a bright future ahead," added Coach Young of the commitments.
