BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University cross country teams will complete at the 2016 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship on Friday, Nov. 11. The meet will be held in Madison, Wisc. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course. The women's 6,000-meter race will begin at 1:00 p.m. ET, and the men's 10,000-meter event will follow one hour later.
The BGSU women's team arrives at the regional following a third-place finish at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships. Their performance at that meet vaulted them from unranked to tenth in the Oct. 31 USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional rankings.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny finished second at the MAC meet, becoming BGSU's first runner-up at the event since 1999. She had her best 6K time of the season (20:48.0) at the MACs and was the Falcons' top runner in all four of her races in 2016.
Redshirt freshman Cassandra Boyle was the team's top runner in the season-opening dual against Toledo and placed 17th at her debut MAC Championship meet. Meanwhile, redshirt junior Rebecca Schott set a personal record (21:42.8) and earned second-team All-MAC status by placing 11th at the MAC Championships.
The Falcon men's team placed fifth at the MAC meet for their best championship performance in 21 years. The team had four runners in the top 25. That group was led by Kohl Taberner, who set a personal record (25:44.9) en route to second-team All-MAC honors.
Taberner was the team's third different top runner in five meets during the 2016. Noah Schaub finished 18th at the MAC Championships and led BGSU in three other meets, while Jonathan Wenning took 19th place. He was the Falcons' best performer at the season-opening dual meet at Toledo.
Following the regional, a total of 31 men's and 31 women's teams will be selected to compete in the 2016 NCAA National Championships. In addition, there will be 38 individual runners from non-qualifying teams who will be selected for the national meet.
The top two teams from each region will automatically advance to the national meet. The remaining 13 teams will be selected following a review of regular season competition and performance at the regionals.
The 38 additional individual qualifiers will be drawn from teams who do not earn bids to the national championship. The top four such runners from each region will earn automatic bids, and two other runners will be selected at-large from the national pool. All individual runners must finish in the top 25 at their regional to be considered for one of these 38 spots.
The NCAA Division I cross country selections will be announced at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.
