BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team lost to Miami University, 3-0, Thursday (Oct. 27) evening inside of Millett Hall. Miami won the match by a score of 25-20; 25-22; 25-20. Senior libero Madeline Garda recorded the 1,500th dig of her career in the match.
Bowling Green now owns an overall record of 16-8, and the Falcons are 6-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Miami is arguably the hottest team in all of college volleyball, as the RedHawks have now won 18-straight matches. The RedHawks improved to 19-4 (11-0 MAC) with the victory.
"We knew going into the match against the top, undefeated team in the conference that all of our players had to play up to their potential, and execute the game plan, if we wanted a chance to win," said head coach Danijela Tomic. "That unfortunately did not happen, and the outcome was what we got. Miami did a good job of shutting down our outside hitters, and when that happens, it is hard to win against anybody. Our serve receive was below our standard, and that created a one-dimensional offense, which was easier to defend.
"The bright spots were our team defense with three players with double-digit digs, led by Madeline's impressive 24-dig effort. Jelena led our offense with 18 kills, and only had three errors. But unfortunately, that wasn't enough to beat Miami. Our team has done a nice job of bouncing back after losses this season. I expect we will do that again on Saturday against WMU."
For the second time in as many games against Miami (last played on Sept. 22) this season, BGSU played the RedHawks extremely tough. In the Sept. 22 match, BGSU lost by a score of 26-24; 25-22; 25-22. Bowling Green has scored at least 20 points in all six sets against Miami, and all six sets have been decided by less than 6 points.
Garda became the second Falcon this season to reach a major career milestone, as Jelena Sunjic, who hit .306 (18-3-49) with a match-high 18 kills in tonight's match, reached 1,000-career kills earlier in the season. Both players will be recognized for their achievements prior to one of the three remaining home matches.
Sunjic picked up her first double-double of the season, as she registered 11 digs to go along with her 18 kills.
Garda, who leads the nation in digs per set (6.46) and total digs (536), had another big match for the Orange and Brown. The senior had 24 digs, and improved her nation-leading average by averaging 8.00 digs per set.
Isabelle Marciniak, who posted a double-double for the second-straight match, picked up 26 assists and 10 digs. The freshman setter also hit .500 (5-0-10) with five kills. Madeline Brandewie also had five kills.
Kallie Seimet and Paulina Iacobelli chipped in with strong defensive efforts. Both Falcons had seven digs apiece. Seimet also notched the first kill of her season, and only the second kill of her career. Offensively, Nicole Slimko and Alyssa Maloney both recorded four kills.
Bowling Green will host Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. match inside of the Stroh Center this Saturday. Next weekend, the Falcons will hit the road for a pair of road matches. The Orange and Brown will take on Kent State on Nov. 4, and Ohio on Nov. 5. The matches will be BGSU's final road matches of the regular season.
The annual Trick-Or-Treat at the Stroh Center event will take place before the Western Michigan match. All kids 12-and-under in a Halloween costume will get into the match for free. BGSU student-athletes will be at several stations, and will pass out candy to all kids from 6-7 p.m.
There will be a "Best Halloween Contest" that will take place after the second set. In addition, parking will be free for the event, and general admission tickets will be sold for $6. The match will also serve as the program's Military Appreciation Day.Â
