Both Flynn and Sullivan earn the district honor for the third consecutive year. Their names now will be placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot. Last year, Flynn went on to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® First Team, while Sullivan was named to the second team.
Flynn and Sullivan are two of only five players from the Mid-American Conference named to a CoSIDA Academic All-District team in 2016.
Flynn and Sullivan, both of whom hail from Naperville, Ill., have been key contributors to BGSU's offense again this season, having combined for eight goals. Flynn leads the team in scoring, with 12 points, while Sullivan is tied for second on the Falcons with 11 points.
Last season, the duo combined for 15 of the Falcons' 29Â goals, and Flynn and Sullivan teamed up to score 19 of BG's 38 goals in 2014, Flynn's first year with the program.
Flynn, an accounting major, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.875. Sullivan, a finance major, has a 3.931 cumulative GPA at BGSU.
Flynn, after leading the Falcons in scoring in each of his first two seasons, paces the team again this fall with those 12 points. Flynn has moved into the BGSU career top-10 in both goals and points. He currently has 27 goals as a Falcon, tying him for the seventh-highest total in school history. And, in just his third year with the team, he is tied for ninth at BG with 66 points. Flynn, as mentioned, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team in both 2014 and '15. In the 2014 campaign, he went on to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team, and he earned first-team honors last year, becoming just the second player in BGSU men's soccer history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team honors on two occasions. Flynn is fourth in school history with nine career game-winning goals at BGSU.
Sullivan, like Flynn, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District® Team for the third-straight season. Last year, he went on to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second-Team honors, giving BGSU a pair of Academic All-Americans in the same season for the first time in program history. Sullivan recently reached the 50-point mark for his career, and he enters Saturday's (Oct. 29) match vs. Akron with career totals of 17 goals and 16 assists. He is tied for fifth in program history with eight career game-winning goals.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District® Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. The teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 5 comprising all student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be nominated, a student-athlete must hold at least sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within the district.
This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
As mentioned, Flynn, Sullivan and the other First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in November.
The Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols, 9-5-2 on the year, are in first place in the Mid-American Conference with two matches remaining in the regular season. BGSU, 2-0-1 in conference play, hosts Akron on Saturday night (Oct. 29), with first touch set for 7:00 p.m. Then, the Brown and Orange will meet Buffalo the following Saturday (Nov. 5) in another 7:00 p.m. start. The top-four teams in the final MAC standings will qualify for the MAC Tournament, which begins on Friday, Nov. 11.
