Scott Miller Added To Biletnikoff Watch List
October 25, 2016 | Football
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc. updated its watch list for the 2016 Fred Biletnikoff Award on Tuesday, Oct. 25, adding wide receiver Scott Miller to the list. The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the top pass catcher in college football and has been awarded since 1994.
Miller has been a revelation as the Falcons' top receiver in 2016. After catching seven balls for 29 yards as a true freshman, Miller has dramatically increased his production as a sophomore. He leads BGSU with 58 receptions for 798 yards and nine touchdowns, and he averages 13.8 yards per catch and 99.8 yards per game.
Three of Miller's nine touchdown receptions have been for more than 50 yards. In the second game of the season against North Dakota, he broke free for a 71-yard score. He added a 57-yard scoring catch against Toledo, then raced for a 72-yard score on BGSU's third play from scrimmage against Miami. The 71- and 72-yard scores are the longest plays for the Falcons in 2016.
Of Miller's nine scores, eight have come in three games. He caught three touchdown passes against North Dakota, then three more at rival Toledo before hauling in two against the RedHawks. He is one of only four players in the FBS to have multiple games of three or more touchdown receptions in 2016.
Miller's last four games in particular have been exceptional. In that span, he has 36 catches, 531 yards and six touchdowns. Over an entire season, that would equate to 108 catches, 1,593 yards and 18 scores. In total, Miller now has four 100-yard receiving games, including three in the last four games.
Prior to his receiving explosion over the last four games, Miller also served as BGSU's primary kickoff and punt returner. He had 106 return yards against Ohio State and 74 more against North Dakota. That helped him produce 133 and 235 all-purpose yards in his first two games. He has earned 100 or more all-purpose yards six times this season.
Miller ranks among national leaders in several important categories. He is 13th in FBS and third in the MAC in receiving yards (798), and he is 16th in FBS and third in the MAC in receiving yards per game (99.8). He is fifth nationally and second in the MAC with nine touchdown receptions, while his 7.3 receptions per game lead the MAC and are 13th nationally. Finally, his 137.38 all-purpose yards per game lead the MAC and are 26th in FBS.
Miller joins fellow BGSU wide receiver Ronnie Moore on the Biletnikoff Award watch list. The list is pared down to ten semifinalists on Nov. 14, and three finalists are announced on Nov. 22. The award is given on Dec. 8 as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show. Bowling Green's Freddie Barnes was a Biletnikoff finalist in 2009 after accumulating 1,770 yards, 19 touchdowns and an NCAA record 155 catches.
