COLUMBUS, Ohio – Charlie Share, a former standout player for the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2017 class on May 20, 2017. The 12th annual induction ceremony, which will see a 21-member class inducted, will take place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Share had nothing short of an illustrious career while playing for the legendary Harold Anderson from 1946-50. Share finished his Falcon career with 1,730 points, which ranks sixth all-time in program history. Across his senior year, he averaged 19.8 points per game and shot 46 percent from the field. Share, a 6-11 dominating presence on the court, averaged 14.3 points over his career.
Bowling Green was extremely successful during Share's playing career, as BGSU recorded records of 28-7 (1946-47), 27-6 (1947-48), 24-7 (1948-49) and 19-11 (1949-50). The Falcons qualified for the National Invitational Tournament in during the 1947-48 and 1948-49 seasons, and reached the semifinals during the 1949 tournament. Share was named the team captain for his senior season (1949-50).
Share was the first ever NBA draft pick, as the Boston Celtics drafted him with the first-overall selection in the 1950 NBA Draft. He ended up not agreeing to terms with the Celtics, and spent the 1950 season playing for Waterloo of the National Professional Basketball League.
Share went on to play parts of nine NBA seasons from 1951-60, and spent time with Fort Wayne, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Minneapolis. He played in 596 games, and averaged 8.3 points and 8.4 rebounds for his career. He was the captain of the 1958 St. Louis Hawks team that won the NBA Championship. Share passed away on June 7, 2012.
