Falcons Kick Off Spring Season With Ohio State And Detroit

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team kicks off the spring season Saturday, taking on the Buckeyes of Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The team will then travel to Detroit, Mich. on Sunday to face the Detroit Titans. Both Ohio State and Detroit will open their seasons with Bowling Green.
The Falcons had a successful fall season with two top flight champions in both singles and doubles. Each member of the team had at least one win for the Orange and Brown.
Freshmen Polina Radeva and Paula Comella Aguilo both won top flights singles championships. Radeva, who went 8-3 in singles play, claimed her championship at the Chicago State Invitational. Aguilo led the Falcons with a 9-3 record and earned her title at the UIC Invitational.
Also in singles, with a record of 6-5, is sophomore Emily Witt. Witt competed in two flight championships over the course of the fall at the Chicago State Invitational and the BGSU Invitational.
Leading doubles play with a 7-2 record are Aguilo and senior Drew Fillis. They captured two top flight championships at the BGSU Invitational and UIC Invitational.
To close out the fall portion of the schedule, the Falcons had Aguilo, Fillis, Radeva and Witt participate at the ITA Regionals. Aguilo and Radeva advanced to the second round of singles play. Aguilo and Fillis, along with Witt and Radeva, would lose in the first round of doubles.
The seven-player roster features one senior (Fillis), two juniors (Antonina Farrar and Leeah Floyd), one sophomore (Witt), and three freshmen (Aguilo, Marina Ferrero and Radeva).
No. 18 Ohio State opens the spring portion of their schedule this weekend. This is the 16th meeting between the Falcons and the Buckeyes. The last time the two teams met was in 2007 when Ohio State defeated BG 7-0. A year ago, OSU went 20-1 overall and 11-1 in the Big Ten. At the Big Ten Tournament the Buckeyes would defeat Purdue 4-2 in the quarterfinals, Northwestern 4-1 in the semifinals and lose in the finals to Michigan 4-0. Ohio State advanced to the NCAA Tournament but lost in the first round to No. 42 Oklahoma, 4-3.

Head coach Aaron Paajanen and the Titans traveled to Bowling Green in the fall to compete in the BGSU Invitational where Nynke Van Der Goot would take third in the number-four flight. A year ago, UDM went 16-9 overall and 7-1 in the Horizon League. The Titans advanced to the Horizon League championship but were defeated by Youngstown State, 4-2.
BGSU holds a 7-2 lead in the all-time series with Detroit. The teams met last season in a dual-match where they played for the first time in nearly four years.
The Falcons will head to Dayton, Ohio, next Friday to face Northern Kentucky University at 6 pm.
