Flynn Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List
August 05, 2015 | Men's Soccer
BGSU junior one of just 30 men's soccer players listed as contenders for this prestigious honor
Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Pat Flynn has been marked as a potential contender for the 2015 Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy. Flynn, a junior, was one of just 30 players named to the award's Watch List on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 5).
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer, presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
"This is a big endorsement of Pat as a player," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "To be named with the best players is the country is a real honor for Pat, for our program and for our University."
Â
The lists are compiled by the NSCAA Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees, based on analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players, as well as any prominent newcomers.
Flynn, a native of Naperville, Ill. (Central H.S.), had one of the top seasons in program history last fall. He started all 21 contests in 2014, his first season at BGSU, and led the team with 14 goals and 32 points. Those totals are the highest by a Falcon since 1996, and ranked him among the national leaders.
Flynn's goal total was tied for the third-highest in a season in program history, and his point total deadlocked him for fifth on that BGSU list.
Flynn led the Mid-American Conference in total goals and game-winning goals (six), and he ranked second in the league in total points, goals per game (0.67) and points per game (1.52). He finished the season ranked among the national leaders in all five of those categories, as he was eighth or better on each list.
Flynn was directly involved in the scoring of nine of BGSU's game-winning goals in 2014. In addition to the six GWG he scored himself, three of his four assists last fall came on the winning tally. He tied program single-game records with five goals and 11 points in the Falcons' win over Findlay on Sept. 2.
Flynn was named to the All-MAC Second Team, and -- among many, many other honors he earned in 2014 -- also was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team.
The striker was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Great Lakes Region First Team last season, becoming BGSU's first all-region first-team selection since the 2000 season, and he was chosen to the All-Ohio First Team by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA). In addition to earning All-MAC honors, Flynn was named to the Academic All-MAC Team, and also was named a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete in the first year of that award's existence. He was one of three finalists for both BGSU's Male Athlete of the Year and Male Newcomer of the Year for 2014-15.
A total of 13 players that earned 2014 NSCAA All-America nods were named to this year's Watch List. Additionally, six of those All-Americans appeared as 2014 MAC Hermann semifinalists. On the women's side, the 28 Watch List members include 13 NSCAA All-Americans from 2014, four of whom were named 2014 semifinalists.
Flynn is one of 15 juniors on the men's Watch List, which also includes 13 seniors and two sophomores. He is one of just two players from the Mid-American Conference to make the men's list.
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches whose programs are current NSCAA College Services members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 players. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, by voting for their favorite semifinalist in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website, managed by LockerDome.
Â
From that pool of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced in January.
Flynn and the Falcons went 14-6-1 overall last season, advancing to the MAC Tournament's championship match for the first time in 11 years. The 2015 team will begin preseason practices next week, with the regular-season opener set for Friday, Aug. 28, vs. SIUE at BGSU's Cochrane Stadium. The SIUE match is the start of a season-long, four-game homestand for the Brown and Orange.
