August 04, 2015 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department mourns the passing of former head men's basketball coach John Weinert, who passed away at the age of 83 on Thursday, July 30 in Sarasota, Fla. Weinert coached the Falcons from 1976-86 and compiled a record of 146-133.
Weinert became the BGSU head basketball coach in 1976 leading the program to two MAC regular season titles in 1980-81 and 1982-83 and two postseason berths in the NIT in 1979-80 and 1982-83. He ranks fifth on the BG list with 146 career wins and was the first BGSU coach to be named league Coach of the Year in 1977-78. As the head coach of the Falcons, Weinert had a five-year period in which his teams finished no lower than third and won two league titles during that time on their way to a 57-27 record in MAC play.
Weinert, who finished with an 89-79 record in MAC play during his coaching career at BGSU, led his team to a 15-3 MAC record in 1982-83, which are the most league wins in school history and is tied for second on the all-time list for winning percentage in league play. The 15 conference victories are the second-highest total in MAC history behind three teams which won 16 MAC games in a single season.
Overall at BGSU, Weinert had six winning seasons and two 20-win seasons. He helped develop such players as David Jenkins, Colin Irish, David Greer and Keith Taylor.
Throughout his career, Weinert directed summer basketball camps nurturing thousands of young players in their quest to develop their basketball skills. John retired from coaching in 1986. He remained active in coaching by leading the U.S. Development Team in Amman, Jordan in 1990. He also helped to establish a state-wide summer 3-on-3 basketball tournament in support of the American Cancer Society. In 1988, he was inducted into the St. Joseph College (Ind.) Hall of Fame.
There will be a private ceremony for the family in September. Memorial Contributions may be made to: The John Weinert Scholarship at BGSU; St. Joseph College (Ind.); or the Tidewell Hospice House, Sarasota, Fla. Dunn Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.dunnfuneralhome.com.
