The Falcons got goals from senior Ryan James and juniors Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan, turning a scoreless match into a three-goal lead in a span of just 4:13. In fact, after James scored, BG looked to have taken a two-goal lead on a Flynn header, but the goal was disallowed. But, the Hermann Trophy Watch List member came right back to score just moments later, then pounced on an errant pass to start the Sullivan scoring play.
The Cougars, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2014, spoiled BG's shutout bid when Jabari Danzy scored in the 62nd minute, but the visitors could draw no closer.
Flynn, who led the Falcons with 32 points last season, had a three-point night on Friday. He assisted on Sullivan's goal, which came just 17 seconds after Flynn's goal. Redshirt freshman Bismark Agyeman, making his BGSU debut, had a two-assist night, with passes to James and Flynn, respectively.
Redshirt junior Ryan Heuton was forced to make just one save in goal in his complete-game effort for the Falcons. At the other end of the pitch, Joe Smith took the loss for the Cougars, while Kyle Dal Santo played the second half in net for the visitors. The visitors were credited with three saves on the night, as Dal Santo made two stops and the Cougars had a 'team save' when a defender blocked Flynn's shot on the goal line.
Neither team had a shot attempt for over 11 minutes at the start of the match, and no one put a shot on frame until over 19 minutes had elapsed, when a header by SIUE's Brett Lane was easily grabbed by Heuton. The Falcons' first two shot attempts of the night were blocked, but the hosts' first shot on goal ended up in the back of the net.
James opened the scoring at the 24:28 mark, giving the Falcons the lead for good. Agyeman, on the right side of the pitch, played a ball to James, who was stationed at the top of the 18-yard box just left of center. James chested the ball down, and before it hit the ground, turned and volleyed a shot just inside the left post. Smith had no chance to make the save, and BG was on the board.
Just over a minute later, it appeared that the Falcons had doubled the lead. After an SIUE foul, a free kick by junior Jacob Roth was deflected as it sailed into the box, and Flynn flicked it into the net with a nod of his head. But, the assistant referee's flag was up, indicating that one of the Falcons was offside, and the goal was disallowed.
Undaunted, Flynn and the Falcons struck less than three minutes later. This time, Agyeman took the ball to the end line on the right side of the pitch, eluded several defenders and played a low cross toward the center of the six-yard box. The ball got past the diving effort of Smith, and Flynn, all alone in the box, easily knocked it home from approximately two yards out.
Almost immediately, the Falcons struck again. Soon after the SIUE kickoff, Flynn pounced on an errant backpass by an SIUE player. He tapped the ball to his left to elude the charging Smith, tracked it down and fired a low shot that was blocked by a defender on the goal line. The rebound, however, trickled toward the right goalpost, and Sullivan was there to blast it into the back of the net.
Sullivan's goal came just 17 seconds after Flynn's marker, and the Falcons had a 3-0 lead. BG took that lead into the half.
With just over an hour gone in the match, the visitors got on the board, as Danzy headed home a left-side cross from Andrew Kendall-Moullin, cutting BG's lead to two goals. The Falcons, however, would let the visitors draw no closer.
The teams each had 11 total shot attempts, with BGSU putting six shots on goal to the Cougars' two. The Falcons had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
The Falcons return to Cochrane to face Western Illinois University on Sunday (Aug. 30), with first touch set for 1:00 p.m.
