WCHA Schedule Release
Bowling Green, Ohio – In conjunction with the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), the Bowling Green State University hockey team has announced its 2015-16 schedule. After a 23-win season that included being ranked among the top 10 teams in the country for much of the season, the Falcons will look to take another step forward in head coach Chris Bergeron's sixth season at the helm.
BGSU Hockey placed third in the WCHA regular season standings a year ago and advanced to the WCHA Final Five semifinal round in the league tournament. The Falcons were a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament, missing out on a chance to compete for the national championship by the slimmest of margins.
Bowling Green will host the University of Toronto in an exhibition game on Saturday, Oct. 3 but the Falcons will play their first six regular season games on the road beginning with a trip to Columbus to face Ohio State on Oct. 9. (NOTE -- Just added / BGSU Hockey will host Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 10) Bowling Green split a season-series with Ohio State a year ago, posting a 3-2 win at Value City Arena.
The Falcon will renew its rivalry with Western Michigan for a midweek contest in Michigan on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The programs have not faced each other since the 2012-13 season when both were members of the now-defunct Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA).
Following that contest, BGSU will travel east to face Canisius and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on back-to-back nights Oct. 16-17. Bowling Green last faced Canisius in 2012-13 with the Falcons earning a 2-2 tie and 3-2 win on the road and the Falcons are 3-0-1 all-time against the Golden Griffins. RIT, coached by Falcon alumnus Wayne Wilson, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015. BGSU and RIT have split six games all-time.
BGSU then concludes the road stretch to open the season with a long trip to begin WCHA play at Alaska Anchorage before finally returning to the Madhouse on Mercer to host Lake Superior State Nov. 6-7.
The Falcons will head on the road to play Michigan Tech before a six-game home stand that begins with Alabama Huntsville Nov. 20-21. The Falcons then host Northern Michigan Nov. 27-28 and Minnesota State Dec. 4-5 before traveling to Minnesota for a two-game set at Bemidji State.
After an 18-day layoff, Bowling Green will host Western Michigan to conclude that season series on Wednesday, Dec. 30. The team will quickly recover for a weekend home set against Clarkson Jan. 2-3. Clarkson leads the all-time series 14-12-1 although the Falcons earned a tie and a win on the road in 2014-15.
Bowling Green then hits the road for the next three games, beginning with a weekend series at Lake Superior State. The Falcons will then make the short trip to face non-conference rival Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Jan. 16. The two programs split the season series in 2014-15 with each team winning at home. The Redhawks earned the No. 4 seed for the 2015 NCAA Tournament but were upset in the first round by eventual national champion Providence in a wild 7-5 contest.
The Falcons then host Alaska Jan. 21-22 and Michigan Tech Jan. 29-30, before going on the road to face Minnesota State. BGSU follows by hosting Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Feb. 12 to conclude that season series.
BGSU finishes the season with three consecutive WCHA series' beginning at Alaska. The Falcons host Ferris State Feb. 26-27 and conclude the regular season at Alabama Huntsville March 4-5. The WCHA First Round takes place March 11-13 and the Final Five is slated for March 18-19. The NCAA First and Second Round is March 25-27.
