Inaugural Ziggys Recognizes BGSU Student-Athletes

Bowling Green, Ohio – The first Ziggys Awards were held Monday night at Bowling Green State University's Stroh Center, honoring and recognizing BGSU's 425 student-athletes and supporters of the department. The Ziggys follow in the tradition of the former Athletics Honors Night.
US Olympic Hockey Coach Dan Bylsma was the Distinguished Alumnus award winner. Bylsma coached the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup Championship, was the 2011 Jack Adams Award Winner as the NHL's Most Outstanding Coach, and coached the US Hockey Team in the 2014 Winter Olympics. Bylsma scored 87 points in 157 games for Bowling Green from 1988-92.
BGSU's Chief Human Resources Officer Rebecca Ferguson earned the department's Distinguished Service award. The Distinguished Service award is given to an individual who provides excellent service to the department's student-athletes.
Hockey's Dan DeSalvo and track and field's Brooke Pleger earned the highest honor given to a student-athlete – The Falcon Medal of Honor. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who embody the essence of the qualities BGSU Athletics hold important for all student-athletes.
Men's Basketball's Richaun Holmes and Pleger were named the Athletes of the Year, given for success in competition. Hockey's Mike Sullivan and women's basketball's Deborah Hoekstra were named the Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while Baseball's Kory Brown and gymnastics' Alyssa Nocella were named the Junior Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
The men's cross country team was honored with the highest team GPA Award for male teams with a 3.51 combined grade point average. The women's cross country team when the female award with a 3.61 GPA.
A number of new awards were given out for 2014-15. Football's Roger Lewis and swimming and diving's Estela Davis earned the Newcomer of the Year honors. Football's win over Indiana was the Comeback Performance of the Year. Swimming and diving's Carmen Young was named the Community Service Individual of the Year and the track and field and women's soccer teams were co-recipients of the Community Service Team of the Year.
Finally, a pair of social media awards were given out for Best Dressed at the event. Gymnastics earned the team honor and swimming and diving's Anna Babinec earned the individual award.
