Mokienko, Kertes earn league's East Division Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, respectively
A pair of Bowling Green State University softball standouts have swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards, the league office announced Tuesday morning (Feb. 24). Sophomore Trista Mokienko has been named MAC Player of the Week, while senior Jamie Kertes has earned MAC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for the East Division.
BGSU has received at least one MAC weekly award after each week of competition this season to date. Junior Braiden Dillow earned MAC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors two weeks ago (Feb. 10), following the Falcons' season-opening tournament at Cleveland State.
Mokienko, a native of Franklinville, N.J., (Delsea Regional), hit .455 and led the Falcons with a slugging percentage of 1.000 as BG played four games at the 2015 Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston, over the weekend. Mokienko went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in the Falcons' 6-1 win over Winthrop on Friday (Feb. 20). Then, she had a monster game at the plate in BGSU's narrow loss to Massachusetts on Saturday morning (Feb. 21).
In that UMass contest, Mokienko went 3-for-4 with two homeruns and three RBI. She gave the Falcons an early lead with a solo homer in the top of the first inning, laced a run-scoring single to right center in the third and homered again in the fifth to give BG a 5-4 lead at the time. She added another hit in Saturday's second game, against the host school.
On the year, Mokienko is hitting .435, and she leads the Falcons with three homers, 20 total bases and a slugging pct. of .870. Her total of three homers matches her output for all of last season, and her 2015 total of five RBI is just two away from last year's total. With six runs scored and three walks, she is halfway to matching those totals from the 2014 season.
Kertes, a native of Carnegie, Pa. (Bishop Canevin H.S.), appeared in all four of BGSU's games over the weekend, and had a 1-0 record. Kertes picked up the win against Winthrop on Friday, allowing just one run and five hits. She pitched two-plus innings of scoreless relief in the Charleston game, scattering four hits, and she allowed one run and three hits in relief against Pittsburgh.
On the weekend, Kertes walked just one batter and struck out three. She has appeared in six of BG's eight games this season to date, starting four, and has a 2-1 record in the circle.
The Falcons, now 4-4 on the young season, are scheduled to head to Bowling Green, Ky., this weekend, taking part in the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic from Friday through Sunday (Feb. 27-March 1). BG will begin the tourney with Friday games vs. Northern Kentucky and the host school, Western Kentucky.
