Bowling Green, Ohio - First-year head coach Chris Jans and the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team have let their play on the court do the talking this season, as the Falcons are 17-6 overall on the year and sit atop of the Mid-American Conference regular season standings with a 9-3 conference record.
However, both Coach Jans and the Falcons are starting to garner some national attention.
In Yahoo Sports Pat Forde's latest installment of Forde Minutes, Forde lists a section entitled "First-Year Coaches Who Are Crushing It" where on that list you will find the head coach of the BGSU Falcons - Chris Jans.
"Chris Jans (14), Bowling Green. The former Wichita State assistant was Gregg Marshall's defensive gameplan guru, and he's brought that mindset to a school that hasn't had a winning season since 2009. The Falcons are 17-6, 9-3 in the Mid-American Conference and in first place in the MAC East. Pomeroy rates them 15th nationally in defensive efficiency. Bowling Green could end up with its first 20-win season since 2002." - From Forde Minutes: Is UK the Florida State of College Basketball?
As for the Falcons as a whole, BGSU has drawn the eye of Fox Sports and Reid Forgrave who lists Bowling Green as a possible 2015 NCAA Tournament Cinderella in his article "Who Will Be NCAA Tournament Cinderellas? Here Are Some Guesses" at FoxSports.com.
"Bowling Green (first in Mid-American Conference East, 17-6, 58th KenPom, 53rd RPI): Bowling Green's first-year coach, Chris Jans, would know a bit about what goes into making a Cinderella story. Jans was Gregg Marshall's associate head coach at Wichita State during the Shockers' shocking run to the Final Four in 2013 and again during the Shockers' undefeated run to the NCAA tournament last season. He's following the same hard-nosed Wichita State formula with the Falcons, whose defense ranks 14th in the nation in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom. This isn't a team that'll lose in March because its opponent gets hot from deep; Bowling Green holds opponents to 29 percent shooting 3-pointers, 11th best in the nation. It defends in the post, too, with senior Richaun Holmes an excellent shot-blocker." From Who Will Be NCAA Tournament Cinderellas? Here Are Some Guesses
The Falcons will return to action this Wednesday night, Feb. 18, as BGSU will host the Miami Redhawks at 7 p.m. in the Stroh Center. The game is slated to be broadcast live by BCSN (TV) and ESPN3 (Internet).
