December 08, 2015 | Women's Basketball
The host University of Virginia turned defense into offense in the second quarter, breaking open a close game en route to a 68-39 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Tuesday morning/afternoon (Dec. 8). The non-conference game was held before a Field Trip Day crowd of over 10,000 fans – mostly elementary- and middle-school-aged kids – at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Cavaliers (7-3) led by a 17-12 score after the first quarter. But, after redshirt sophomore Kennedy Kirkpatrick hit a three-pointer to get the Falcons (4-4) within three early in the second period, the hosts proceeded to go on a 20-2 run over the remaining nine minutes of the half. The Wahoos held BGSU scoreless over the final 6:42 of the second quarter, opening up a 38-17 halftime lead.
UVA scored the final 15 points of the second quarter and the first seven of the third, taking a 28-point lead before senior Lauren Tibbs scored with 7:13 to go in the third quarter.
The Cavaliers forced BGSU into 24 turnovers on the day, and UVA had a 28-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Before the largest crowd to see a BGSU women's basketball game in the history of the program, four players scored in double figures for the hosts, Faith Randolph and Aliyah Huland El recorded 14 points apiece, while Lauren Moses had a double-double, with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as the 'Hoos held a 46-31 advantage on the glass.
Mikayla Venson had 10 points for UVA.
Freshman Carly Santoro scored eight points for the Brown and Orange, while junior Ashley Tunstall had seven points, six rebounds and a team-leading three assists. Tibbs and Kirkpatrick scored six points apiece, with Tibbs pulling down a BG-best eight rebounds and Kirkpatrick six.
Tibbs opened the game's scoring, hitting a shot from close range after the Falcons got a stop at the defensive end on the game's opening possession. Randolph knocked down a three-point field goal, then a Moses layup gave the hosts a three-point lead.
Senior Miriam Justinger quickly answered, taking a pass from Tunstall and knocking down a three-pointer of her own, but Randolph hit her second triple of the game, with a defender's hand in her face, and the hosts were up by an 8-5 count.
Back came the Falcons, however, as Tibbs hit a second-chance layup in traffic, and Justinger scored on a driving one-hander in the paint. The Brown and Orange had a 9-8 lead with just over four minutes gone.
Huland El's layup was answered by a pair of free throws from freshman Sydney Lambert, but Moses scored inside, giving UVA a 12-11 lead, and the 'Hoos would not trail again.
Huland El hit another layup, then -- after Tunstall split a pair of charity tosses -- Huland knocked down a three-pointer in the final minute of the period, giving the hosts a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
With exactly one minute gone in the second quarter, Kirkpatrick took a Tunstall pass and hit a corner three, and UVA's lead was 18-15. But, the home team responded by scoring five-straight points, including a Huland El triple that gave the hosts a 23-15 lead. Tunstall drove the baseline and hit a nifty layup with 6:42 left in the half, but those would prove to be BG's last two points of the quarter.
The Wahoos got a three-point play from Moses, and Randolph hit back-to-back jumpers, the second giving the home team a 30-17 lead midway through the quarter. Several more layups preceded a three-pointer by J'Kyra Brown, and it was a 20-point game, 37-17. A late free throw completed the first-half scoring.
The Falcons committed nine turnovers in the second quarter and 15 in the first half of play.
Virginia scored the first seven points of the second half before Tibbs took Lambert's pass and hit a foul-line jumper with 7:13 left in the quarter. But, just under a minute later, the senior center was whistled for her fourth foul of the game and headed to the bench.
After the Tibbs jumper, UVA scored seven consecutive points to extend the lead over 30 points for the first time. Tunstall hit a hesitation layup off of a Santoro pass with two and a half minutes left in the period, and Santoro curled around a screen for a three-pointer with 93 seconds to go, but a pair of Venson free throws gave the 'Hoos a 56-24 lead after 30 minutes.
Two more Venson tosses proved to be the only scoring in the first four-plus minutes of the fourth quarter, but Kirkpatrick drove and dished to sophomore Sarah Baer for a layup, and moments later, Kirkpatrick hit a triple.
The hosts, however, continued to press the Falcons, and UVA slowly extended the lead. The margin reached a game-high 38 points when Brown split a pair of free throws with 1:49 remaining. Tunstall and junior Rachel Konieczki each connected for two free throws, and Santoro scored the game's last five points, knocking down a pair of shots from the stripe before taking a pass from junior Abby Siefker and draining a triple.
The crowd of 10,048 was the largest to see a BGSU game in program history, besting a pair of 9,000-plus throngs that saw BG play on back-to-back days in a tournament hosted by New Mexico 11 years ago (Dec. 10-11, 2004).
The Falcons are now idle from competition until Monday, Dec. 21, when South Dakota State University comes to Northwest Ohio. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
