"Our program is looking forward to the coming 2016 season," said Willis, who is in her first year at the helm of the Falcons. "Our student-athletes have been working extremely hard this fall and our staff is proud of the strides they have made. We have put together a competitive travel schedule that will help us to prepare for the tough MAC schedule that lies before us this spring."
For the third consecutive season, the Falcons will begin the year in Cleveland, at the CSU Dome Invitational on Valentine's Day weekend. BGSU will open the year with a Feb. 13 game against Morehead State, and the team's tourney opponents that weekend (Feb. 13-14) also include Niagara, Robert Morris and host Cleveland State.
The Brown and Orange will head south for multiple tournaments over the remainder of February and the first half of March. BGSU will participate in Kennesaw State's Rafter Memorial on Feb. 19-21, facing Morehead State for the second-straight weekend, along with Rutgers, Bradley and KSU.
BG ends the month of February with a trip to Mobile, Ala., for the South Alabama Invitational (Feb. 26-28). The Falcons' five games that weekend include a pair of contests vs. both Dartmouth and Wichita State as well as one game vs. host USA.
Then, to begin March, the Falcons venture to Towson, Md., for the Tiger Clash (March 5-6), playing two games each vs. Morgan State and host Towson. The following weekend sees BGSU in Tampa, Fla., for the USF Under Armour Showcase, where the opponents will include North Dakota, East Carolina, Hartford, Fairfield and South Dakota.
BG returns north to face perennial national power Notre Dame in a March 17 game in South Bend, and the Falcons remain in Indiana for that weekend's Hoosier Classic, which begins the following day. That tourney, hosted by IU, will see the Orange and Brown take on IPFW and Western Illinois on March 18 and Michigan State and UIC the following day.
The home schedule begins on March 23, as the Falcons face IPFW in a non-conference doubleheader. Then, two days later, BGSU begins Mid-American Conference play by hosting Northern Illinois in a three-game weekend series (March 25-26).
This year's MAC schedule sees teams playing a three-game series, with a Friday single game followed by a Saturday doubleheader. The old format saw a team play a pair of weekend doubleheaders against two different opponents.
The league schedule will see the Falcons play three games vs. each of the other five schools in the East Division, while crossing over to play a three-game set against three West Division opponents.
In addition to the league-opening weekend set vs. NIU, the MAC slate also sees the Falcons hosting Central Michigan (April 8-9), Kent State (April 29-30) and Ohio (May 6-7), while BG takes to the road to face Eastern Michigan (April 1-2), Buffalo (April 15-16) and Akron (April 22-23).
The Falcons play one midweek MAC series, taking on Miami in a road doubleheader on April 5, before welcoming the RedHawks to Meserve Field for a single game the following week (April 13).
BGSU also faces Valparaiso in a road twinbill (March 29), and the Falcons play a single game at Toledo on April 26. That game vs. the Rockets will not count in the conference standings.
The 2016 MAC Championships are scheduled for May 11-14 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, with the tournament winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Willis and her staff, assistant coaches Brittany Lastrapes and Tiffany Ricks and volunteer assistant Kolleen Kopchak, return eight of nine players who started over 50 percent of the team's games a year ago. The 2015 Falcons finished with an overall record of 20-28 and a MAC ledger of 8-14. A total of 19 players are back from that team.
