Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA announced qualifiers today for the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary competition and five Falcons earned bids to the event. Three of those student-athletes qualified in two events each.
Defending region preliminary round hammer throw champion Brooke Pleger, a redshirt junior, is the No. 2 qualifier in the event. She is a heavy favorite to land one of the top 12 spots and a trip to the NCAA National Championships. Senior Tina Perrine and freshman Kori Reiser will join Pleger in the hammer throw field, but both also qualified in the discus. Senior Jeanette Pettigrew will make her first appearance at the NCAA regional meet, earning bids in both the 100 and the 200. Finally, freshman Makenzie Wheat will make her debut in the shot put.
"It is great for Bowling Green Track and Field to be well represented at a meet of this caliber," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "This was a major goal for us going into the outdoor season. For Tina and Jeanette, it is an awesome opportunity to compete in a Bowling Green uniform one final time. The experience for Kori and Makenzie will be invaluable for future years. It will be nice to have Brooke return to this meet as the experienced veteran. I am proud that we are bringing a much larger group this year and hope it continues to grow in number and diversity as we move forward."
A year ago, only Pleger qualified for the NCAA regional meet, posting the top hammer throw mark and earning a bid to the NCAA National Championships, where she placed seventh and earned NCAA First Team All-American status. Prior to Pleger's bid to regionals a year ago, no Falcon had qualified since 2011, when both Jessie Rowland and Ashley Harris represented.
The top 48 declared competitors in the east region in each event advance to the NCAA regional preliminary round. The top 12 finishers in the east will advance to the NCAA National Championship, along with the top 12 finishers in the west, for a field of 24 to compete for All-American status and a national title.
While Pleger is the No. 2 seed in the hammer throw, Perrine is No. 34 and Reiser is No. 37. Only BGSU and Louisville will be represented by three student-athletes in the event at the regional. In the discus, Perrine is seeded No. 38 and Reiser is No. 43. Pettigrew is ranked No. 40 in the 100 and No. 46 in the 200. Wheat took the final spot in the shot put.
The NCAA East Preliminary Round runs May 29-31 with the hammer throw beginning at noon on the first day of competition. The first round of the 100 will be held at 6:55 pm on the first day as well. The discus will be competed at 3:30 pm on May 30 and the second round of the 100 will take place at 6:45 pm. The first round of the 200 will also be held on May 30 at 8:25 pm. On the final day of the meet, the shot put will be held at 4 pm and the second round of the 200 will begin at 7:50 pm.
The top 12 competitors in each event will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
