BOWLING GREEN – It only took four days into the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic men's ice hockey tournament for the two Bowling Green State University representatives to make impacts for their respective teams.
Dan Bylsma, who compiled 37 goals and 50 assists in 157 games for the Orange and Brown from 1988-92, led the U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team to arguably the biggest victory in the Sochi games thus far. Team USA's T.J. Oshie scored the deciding shootout tally in the eighth round of the tiebreaking procedure to hand the U.S. a 3-2 triumph at the Bolshoy Ice Dome.
With the victory over Russia, Team USA sits at a perfect 2-0 in the preliminary round, with their next game scheduled to play tomorrow (Feb. 16) against Slovenia at 7:30 a.m. ET.
Meanwhile, current Falcon and the only NCAA Division I men's ice hockey player competing in the 2014 Sochi games, Ralfs Freibergs stepped out onto the ice for the first time to compete with the best from around the world.
Freibergs recorded 4:56 of ice time throughout the tilt during Team Latvia's 5-3 loss to Sweden on Saturday afternoon. The current Bowling Green defenseman tallied his first point with an assist at the 1:28 mark into the third period to cut the Sweden deficit to within 4-3.
