BGSU Men’s Basketball Signs Three During the Early Signing Period
November 12, 2014 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – With the tip-off of the 2014-15 season just a few days away, Bowling Green State University head men's basketball coach Chris Jans is excited to announce the signing of Jalone Friday (Oklahoma City Storm HomeSchool/Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), Jamir Andrews (Sheridan College/Dublin H.S./Dublin, California) and Malik Hluchoweckyj (Bellevue West H.S./Bellevue, Nebraska) to National Letters of Intent to continue both their athletic and academic careers at Bowling Green beginning in the Fall of 2015.
"I am pleased to announce our Fall 2014-15 recruiting class. We have addressed some areas of need as we move our program forward. All three of the student-athletes that will join our program next season have individual skills and talent that will aid us in our progress towards winning championships," said Coach Jans. "The best attributes that all three of these young men share is that they are good kids and hard workers. I am very excited for these guys and their respective families to join our basketball family!"
Friday comes to Bowling Green from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where the 6-8, 220 pound forward is suiting up for the Oklahoma City Storm HomeSchool squad and head coach Kurt Talbott this season. As a junior at Millwood High School in 2013-14, Friday averaged 10.3 points per game and was an Oklahoman 2013-14 Little All-City Honorable Mention selection. This season, Friday has already posted a game with 46 points for the No. 1 ranked HomeSchool Basketball Team in the nation and helped lead the OKC Storm to a National Tip-Off Tournament Championship to start his senior year. Named to the 2014-15 Newcomer of the Year national watch list for boys basketball by the National Christian HomeSchool Basketball Championships (NCHBC) and HSLive365.com, the versatile combo forward is also a member of the Dallas Mustangs (Oklahoma City) AAU Team for head coach Avery West.
"Jalone Friday will bring a unique skill set for someone 6'8''/220 walking through the door. He not only has the size to be a force around the basket, but he also possesses the ability to shoot from beyond the arc," Coach Jans commented. "Jalone cares about winning and has an innate toughness about him. The sky is the limit for Jalone!"
Andrews will head to BGSU from Sheridan College in Sheridan, Wyoming where he is a 6-3, 200 pound sophomore guard for the Generals this season under Coach Matt Hammer's leadership. Last year as a freshman, Andrews averaged 12.3 points on 42.6 percent shooting in 33 games for Sheridan. He also shot 40.2 percent from behind the three-point arc and 82.1 percent from the free throw line to help lead the Generals to a 27-6 overall record and a spot in the Region IX Semifinals where they lost to the eventual champions in Northeastern Junior College. Andrews played high school ball at Dublin High School in Dublin, California where he helped lead the Gaels to a 27-7 overall record and to an appearance at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Final 4 his senior season. As a senior, Andrews averaged 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals per game. A two-time First-Team All DFAL selection, Andrews was also named to the Tri Valley All-Metro Team. Andrews is currently averaging 20.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 47 percent from the three-point range and 92 percent from the free throw line over Sheridan's first four games.
"Jamir Andrews can really score the basketball while possessing great vertical athleticism. He is body ready and is wired to score. We will lose some significant scoring with our seniors departing and we expect Jamir to fill some of that void," continued Jans. "I love the demeanor and maturity Jamir will bring with him as well."
Hluchoweckyj will join the Falcons in 2014-15 from Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, Nebraska where the 6-0, 175 pound guard plays for head coach Doug Woodard. A two-sport standout at Bellevue West H.S., Hluchoweckyj was also heavily recruited on the gridiron as a wide receiver and cornerback from schools such as Kansas, Nebraska and Wisconsin. Last season as a junior, he was named to the First-Team Super-State after leading the Thunderbirds to the Class-A State Championship Title for the first time since 2005. He was also the first junior to be named to The World-Herald's All-Nebraska First-Team since 2012, as he averaged a team-best 15.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. The Thunderbirds finished the year at 22-6 overall and were ranked as high as No. 1 in the state and No. 64 nationally. Hluchoweckyj led Coach Bob Franzese's OSA Crusaders AAU team to a 34-6 record last July.
"Malik Hluchoweckyj is an interesting student-athlete. Malik could have played Division I athletics in three different sports," Coach Jans said. "I love having some guys with that football mentality coupled with superior athleticism. Malik high jumped 6'10'' as a sophomore in high school and also was heavily recruited for football. Malik is a winner and having point guards that win is always a plus. Malik will immerse himself at BGSU from the initial time he steps foot on campus."
